‘AITA for unintentionally tricking our neighbors into thinking we have a newborn baby?’
Misunderstandings happen all the time, but when it involves loved ones and neighbors, transparency is key.
A couple recently found themselves in an unexpected situation after putting up a sign to stop political solicitors from knocking on their door.
To prevent distractions, they falsely mentioned having a baby, only to be overwhelmed by an outpouring of help and kindness from their elderly neighbors, who believed they had a baby.
Feeling guilty, the couple now wonders if they’ve unintentionally misled their neighbors and whether they’re in the wrong.
Couple unintentionally misleads neighbors
In a post on Reddit's 'Am I The A**hole' section, user darklipstick686 shared a lighthearted story about a misunderstanding in her neighborhood. She began by explaining that she, a 27-year-old woman, and her 28-year-old husband moved into a family-friendly neighborhood a few years ago, where the neighbors are mostly elderly couples and families. They’ve also been receiving political canvassers regularly due to the election season.
She explained how the constant interruptions became distracting, as she works from home and is often on calls or in meetings. Initially, she put a sign on the door asking people not to knock, but it didn’t help, as some people would still yell, "Hello!"
To solve the problem, she came up with a new sign: "POLITICAL SOLICITORS: We are confident in who we are voting for and appreciate your great efforts in what you do. Please DO NOT ring the doorbell or knock. The dog WILL bark, waking the baby and interrupting my workday. Thank you and happy canvassing!"
After putting up the new sign, people only left flyers, and the interruptions stopped.
But following the sign, she and her spouse started receiving extra kindness from their neighbors, who now believed they had a baby. The OP said, "We live in an area that gets a lot of snow and since the beginning of winter, our neighbors are always snow-blowing and shoveling each other's sidewalks and driveways, including our's."
She continued, "My spouse and I are literally not even given a chance to shovel our own sidewalk or driveway, or our neighbors', as by the time we are both off work, it is already done for us! I really appreciate this gesture, but spouse and I want to return it to our neighbors. I've even tried figuring out which houses are responsible, so I can bake them some goods or get them gift cards."
Then, one day, her husband came home to find a neighbor snow-blowing their driveway. He approached the man to thank him and offer cash, but the neighbor refused, saying, “Save it for the baby”, and added that he was happy to help everyone.
The Redditor shared that her husband was stunned and didn’t know how to respond. Later, when they discussed the interaction, they realized that the entire neighborhood might think they have a baby because of the sign she put on their door. She laughed at first, but then felt "horrified".
She concluded her post asking, "What if they've been helping out so much because they believe we have a newborn? It is funny, but I also want to give back some way and show that I appreciate their efforts and want to help our little community. So AITA?"
Redditors suggest ideas to the couple on how to clear the air about baby
After discovering the unintentional misunderstanding created in the neighborhood due to the couple's sign, many Redditors weighed in on the situation.
One user shared, "NTA. Welp. Time to either adopt or borrow a baby a few times year."
The second person commented, "Nta but say you were babysitting in that period for a someone and that you appreciated the gesture."
The third person wrote, "Honestly, this is HILARIOUS! You accidentally created the most wholesome neighborhood con without even realizing it. Your neighbors think they’re rallying around a family with a baby, but really, they’re just supporting a couple with a very barky dog. The fact that you feel guilty shows how kind and considerate you are, you clearly didn’t intend to mislead anyone. NTA!"
A Redditor wrote, "Aw. This is so innocent and sweet. You tried to ask for the silence and it wasn’t given. You took matters into your own hands and your guilty conscience is eating away at you. I suggest playfully explaining the reason behind it all while handing over the baked goods."
One suggested, “Just put a sign up that says the baby our sign referred to was us babysitting sorry for the confusion."
One more shared, "Bake cookies to give to the neighbors, and let them know the story when you bring the treats."
A person said, "Just say you were babysitting or tell them the truth and have a good laugh."
