AITA: Internet supports woman as she reveals she doesn't want her 'narcissistic' mother to see her baby
Everybody wants to live in harmony and abundant love with their family members. However, one might end up with entitled parents who disregard the limits if life throws a curveball. In today's story, a 37-year-old pregnant woman detailed a similar situation where she does not want her "narcissistic and very emotionally abusive" mother to "come see the baby."
The original poster (OP), known as ValuableObjective244, explained her current situation with her mother on Reddit’s 'Am I The A**hole' (AITA) forum, which has garnered around 190 upvotes and over 50 comments, at the time of writing.
Pregnant woman refuses to allow 'narcissistic and emotionally abusive' mother to see her baby
The expecting woman shared the unpleasant history she shared with her 65-year-old mother by writing: "There’s just too much history to even share between my mom(65f) and I(37f)… but essentially she is a narcissistic and very emotionally abusive mom."
"I am the black sheep of the family and will always be because I stand up for myself and for my siblings. Of course that infuriates my mom because I will always be truthful and call anyone out," she wrote on Reddit.
The author revealed her situation over how her parents "lived overseas but never ever was supportive during or after any of my births." She wrote, "I am 37 weeks pregnant with my last baby and live in the states... I even developed depressions after my second child because it was so heartbreaking how much my parents didn’t care."
"Anyway with this pregnancy we were told that baby is smaller than we’d like him to be so I’ve been worried," she wrote.
Drawing a comparison between her in-laws and her parents, the woman wrote: "My in laws are amazing people and even though they live half way across the states they’re going to be here before my birth and stay for a while just so they can help out with the older kiddos. My parents on the other hand are going to come to the United States but (in their words) “might visit the baby” if they’re able to since they’re going to be at my grandparent’s place which is a few hours away."
The woman shared that her mother has been identified with a health crisis which she did not want her other siblings to know. "Last month they found out that my mom had a mass in her lungs... My mom told two of us siblings but told us not to tell our other siblings since they act like “they don’t care” about her well being. I thought it was is dumb but I didn’t say anything," she wrote.
She further explained how her mother turned the table around and made it seem as if the woman had betrayed her. The OP wrote, "Then my mom tells one of my siblings that didn’t know about the situation because she felt like telling. So long story short, that information got to my brother and he asked me if mom had cancer. I told him that they weren’t sure if it was cancer or not."
"Now my mom is crying to my sister that knew the whole situation saying that I betrayed her trust and that I’m so horrible for sharing her secret," she added.
The author concluded her post by writing that she is "about to send them a long message telling my parents to not even bother to come see the baby anymore," which she is unsure about, before expressing her concern that she doesn't "want to stoop to her level."
Reddit users call OP 'NTA' for not letting her mother see her baby
The Original Poster received much support from the Reddit community, which approved her decision to refuse her parents to see her baby anymore and called the expecting woman an "NTA."
One wrote, "NTA, your sibling asked a direct question that you had the answer to full stop. Holy f*** is your family nuts, I'd stay far far away and a new baby is the perfect reason."
Another commenter added in part, "NTA, but calibrate your expectations about your mom's reaction. She's not going to get it. She's not going to see your side of things. She's not going to apologize. She is constitutionally incapable of any of those things. This is who she is; this is the way she is always going to be."
"Nta. And don’t expect your mother to do anything other than what she had done for your first 37 years. Focus on yourself and your family," chimed in a user.
Another Redditor blatantly wrote, "NTA. Just cut them off."
"NTA. Your parents have caused you problems time and time again. There's no point in letting them back into your life when they have had so many chances already," wrote one.
Another wrote, "NTA for cutting contact, that sounds like the healthiest possible outcome. Why not just block her. If flying monkeys try to contact you, block them too. Stress is bad for both you and baby."
