NAMPA, IDAHO: Democratic Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is accused of following former vice president Kamala Harris’ “playbook” after she appeared to switch accents to cater to the crowd gathered at her Fight Oligarchy rally in Nampa, Idaho.

The liberal congresswoman — who is currently touring the country as part of the Fight Oligarchy tour, in association with left-leaning independent Vermont senator, Bernie Sanders — addressed a 12,000-odd crowd on Monday, April 14.

While the New York progressive has been creating headlines for her campaign, which is predominantly aimed at criticizing the Trump administration in general and Tesla CEO Elon Musk in particular, her Monday rally gained prominence for a separate reason altogether.

Apart from their rally in Nampa, the pair also addressed audiences in Los Angeles, California; Las Vegas; Tempe and Tucson, Arizona; and Denver and Greeley, Colorado, while several rallies are upcoming.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s accent draws Kamala Harris comparisons

One clip from the congregation especially drew the attention of the conservatives, who accused Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of feigning her accent in order “to fit the demographic” she was addressing.

Taking to social media, conservative influencer Benny Johnson mocked the 35-year-old, saying, "Kamala Harris just introduced yet another new accent," while referencing the former Democratic presidential candidate.

Johnson continued, "Sike, this is AOC. Seems to be using Kamala’s playbook. I guess she didn’t pay attention during the 2024 election."

Another conservative influencer, Gunther Eagleman, too ridiculed Ocasio-Cortez, by writing on X, "Oh look, AOC is doing the interchangeable accents to fit the demographic she's in front of," and added, "Did she take notes from Kamala?"

"AOC is pretending to have some sort of strange accent," pointed out social media account, Townhall.com. The tweet further said, "This is exactly what Kamala Harris did on the campaign trail. Why do they do this?"

Breaking 911 also took their turn to slam Ocasio-Cortez’s accent, as they wrote, "WATCH: AOC debuts new accent ahead of reported Presidential run,” adding, "It’s worse than Kamala’s or Hillary."

Ocasio-Cortez’s comparisons to Kamala Harris originated from last year’s presidential campaign, when the former vice president was often criticized for adopting different accents to address different crowds, as reported by Fox News.

Internet says Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's accent was 'all over the place'

Not only established conservative influencers, other social media users also had a lot to say about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's accent switch.

One user slammed, "AOC accent is ridiculous. No one is buying what she is selling. She won’t get nominated for President."

"We didn’t want Kamala in the first place. Who honestly thinks Kamala 2.0 might work?" said another.

"Ooof she lost me at the end. Went wayyyyy overboard as usual," remarked one.

"Because they have nothing to offer, do they need to change their persona," mocked a user.

"Hillary Clinton also did this when speaking to the black community," pointed out an individual.

"I’m not even sure what her accent was. It was all over the place," a comment read.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's past defense of her accent switch

This is, however, not the first time that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came under fire for switching accents. Previously, in August 2024, the Democrat was blasted online for speaking in a different accent at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.

Even before that, in 2019, she was accused of using a “phony” Southern accent while addressing a majority Black audience at Rev Al Sharpton’s National Action Network convention, as reported by the New York Post.

During that time, she clapped back at critics, writing on X, “Folks talking about my voice can step right off.”

“Any kid who grew up in a distinct linguistic culture & had to learn to navigate class enviros at school/work knows what’s up,” explained Ocasio-Cortez, adding, “My Spanish is the same way.”
