Amazon declined to comment but told the WSJ that the show is not in active development.
“Since our acquisition of MGM, we have had preliminary internal discussions about what’s next for ‘The Apprentice’ as a property,” a spokesperson told the WSJ, but did not provide further details.
Insiders told Variety that the show is currently “not in development” and that there have not been “any discussions with anyone outside the company” about producing an ‘The Apprentice’ reboot.
The company began revisiting the show internally as early as 2025, but spokespersons have clarified that it is not in active development.
As part of these discussions, Donald Trump Jr, the eldest son of Donald Trump, has been floated as a possible face of a rebooted version.
Trump’s legacy tied to ‘The Apprentice’
‘The Apprentice’ followed a group of aspiring entrepreneurs competing in a series of challenges testing their business acumen.
One by one, they were eliminated at the whim of Trump, who, with a finger point and his signature scowl, would tell them, “You’re fired,” before they exited the competition.
The show originally aired on NBC from 2004 to 2017 and featured Donald Trump as host for most of its run. The series played a key role in boosting his public profile, with contestants competing for a job within his organization.
In 2024, Trump revealed in an interview that after he left the show in 2015 to run for president, he told NBC that Ivanka Trump would be his first choice to take over ‘The Apprentice’ as host.
“I said, ‘The best person to hire would be Ivanka Trump,’” he said. “I didn’t press it. But I felt Ivanka would have been by far the best person you could hire.”
The show was nominated for nine Emmys during its run and spawned multiple spinoffs, including ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and ‘The Apprentice: Martha Stewart.’
