Who inherits Dolly Parton’s Dollywood stake? Inside the future of her million dollar empire

PIGEON FORGE, TENNESSEE: Dolly Parton’s death has left behind a $450 million fortune, a sprawling business empire, and a major question surrounding one of its most recognizable assets: her 50 per cent stake in Dollywood.

We look at what could happen to Parton’s Dollywood ownership, who may ultimately control the stake, and how her name and brand could continue to shape the Tennessee attraction.

MEAWW also spoke to Charles Kite, General Counsel for Dollywood, who shared a personal tribute to the late country music icon.

Did Dolly Parton own Dollywood?

The answer is yes but only half of it.

Dolly Parton remained a 50 per cent partner in Dollywood, with Herschend Family Entertainment holding the other half.

Recent reporting continues to identify Dollywood as one of the principal sources of Parton’s wealth. 

Forbes estimated Parton’s overall fortune at about $450 million in 2025, while her catalog of more than 3,000 songs was valued separately at roughly $120 million, with her Dollywood stake accounting for a substantial portion of her wealth.

The economic footprint of Dollywood is considerably larger than the value of Parton’s personal stake.

The destination has been credited with generating around $1.8 billion in annual economic impact for Tennessee and supporting more than 23,000 jobs in the economy.

And the partnership between Parton and Herschend appears set to continue in some form even after her death.

Following Parton’s passing on August 25, Dollywood described her as its 'Dreamer-in-Chief.'

Eugene Naughton, president of Dollywood Parks & Resorts, said the organization was committed to carrying her legacy forward.

The park also emphasized Parton’s own wish that Dollywood remain a place of “joy, hope and togetherness.”

Who inherits Dolly Parton's stake?

This is one question the public may not get a straightforward answer to, at least for now.

Parton had no children, while her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, died in 2025.

That leaves questions about where her business interests, intellectual property and other assets will ultimately go.

But being a relative does not automatically mean receiving Parton’s Dollywood stake. The structure of her estate matters.

Estate attorneys who spoke to 'People' said the public may never know exactly who inherits much of Parton’s fortune because significant assets could have been placed in trusts.

A 'will' generally becomes part of the probate process and can be publicly accessible, while assets held through 'trusts' can pass to beneficiaries outside probate and remain private.

That distinction could be especially important for Dollywood.

Parton’s ownership is a business interest rather than a simple personal possession. 

There is also an important distinction between the Dollywood ownership stake and the Dolly Parton name.

The park may have a business interest in continuing to use Parton’s name, imagery and legacy, but those rights can be separate from the underlying equity.

The eventual estate arrangements could therefore influence both who controls Parton’s financial interest and who has authority over aspects of her name and intellectual property.

And there is a deeply personal side to Parton’s legacy that goes beyond legal documents.

Charles Kite, Dollywood's General Counsel remembered Parton not primarily as a billionaire entertainer or businesswoman, but for the way she treated people.

“She was an incredible gifted, very kind, and helpful person, that we should all strive to be like. I have been blessed to know her,” Kite said.

What happens to Dolly Parton brand?

While the ownership question can be settled via estate documents, the brand question is considerably more complicated.

Dolly Parton turned her name into one of the most recognizable personal brands in entertainment.

Her music, appearance, storytelling, philanthropy and connection to her Tennessee roots became part of the commercial identity surrounding her businesses.

Dollywood benefited enormously from that connection.

Parton's personality and life story were incorporated into the attraction itself, from its Appalachian themes to live entertainment and attractions connected to her upbringing.

Her philanthropic legacy is another major part of that brand.

Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, more than 330 million books have been distributed to children worldwide, turning her public image into something closely associated with literacy and giving.

Meanwhile, the business empire she built is not disappearing with her.

Several projects and ventures were already positioned to continue after her death, while Dollywood remains a functioning business with Herschend as its long-standing operating partner.

The resort also has a $500 million, 10-year expansion plan announced in 2021, providing a long-term roadmap for new attractions, accommodations and other developments.

That expansion is continuing into 2026. NightFlight Expedition, an immersive indoor adventure coaster and the largest single-attraction investment in Dollywood Parks & Resorts history, opened to guests on August 19, 2026, following an investment of more than $50 million.

Multiple reports state that Parton’s wider portfolio included her Dollywood stake, music rights, consumer products and other entertainment ventures, with posthumous projects also in development.

The immediate future, therefore, is less about whether Dollywood survives and more about how much of Dolly Parton remains embedded in the business she helped build and how that legacy evolves as the resort continues its expansion.
