WASHINGTON, DC: During a meeting with a bipartisan group of mayors at the White House on Friday, January 19, President Joe Biden commented on the security of the US-Mexico border.

In response to a question from a reporter, Biden stated that the southern border has not been secure for the “last 10 years.”

He further emphasized that he has been vocal about this issue for the past decade and intreated sufficient funding from Congress to address it, according to a report by The Hill.

The President's remarks highlight the ongoing challenges in front of US border security and the need for continued efforts to enhance it.

What did Joe Biden say while briefing the press?

Fox News White House Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich asked President Joe Biden on Friday whether he believes that the US-Mexico border is secure, to which Biden replied, “No, it’s not.”

“I haven’t believed that for the last 10 years, and I’ve said it for the last 10 years. Give me the money,” the 81-year-old Commander-in-Chief added.

President Biden's assessment of the current state of escalating migration at the US-Mexico border coincides with his efforts to pass a supplementary spending package that has currently reached an impasse in Congress.

The legislation in question aims to incorporate border measures that are intended to meet the demands of Republican lawmakers in Congress, who have obstructed the passage of funding for Ukraine, a priority of the President, as it continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.

Per USA Today, the President is hopeful that the Senate will negotiate a deal on border measures by next week.

However, the legislation may encounter difficulties in the lower chamber, where Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is facing mounting pressure from Republican standard bearers, who are inclined to reject the bipartisan package.

Biden said in his speech to the visiting bipartisan mayors on Friday, “I believe we need significant policy changes, including changes in our asylum system to ensure we have the authorities we need to control the border.”

The incumbent reassured them of his intent to fix this raging issue, by saying, “I’m ready to act.”

"Now the question is for the Speaker and House Republicans," Biden questioned, alluding to the GOP-led House and Speaker Mike Johnson.

He continued, "Are they ready to act as well? They have to choose if they want to solve a problem or keep weaponizing me to score political points against the president.”

He further emphasized, “I'm ready to solve the problem. I really am. Massive changes. And I mean it sincerely."

Republican senators have put forth the argument that the Ukraine supplemental spending may be used as leverage to ensure the implementation of certain border provisions.

However, House Speaker Johnson, who is currently operating with a slim majority in the House and is potentially facing an ousting, has encountered another obstacle in the form of former President Trump.

On Wednesday, Trump expressed his expectations that Johnson will only agree to a deal that is "perfect on the border."

After he met with the bipartisan group of mayors, Biden was questioned about whether he thinks his policies have played a role in the increasing migration at the border.

In response, he denied any responsibility and mentioned that he had requested for more judges and other pertinent resources.

"No. I've asked for thousands more of everything from judges to − anyway," Biden said, before he quickly switched to a different question.
