NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: On November 5, Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo broke his silence, warning that the Democratic Party is “headed down a dangerous road” just a day after losing the New York City mayoral race to fellow Democrat Zohran Mamdani.

In his first public appearance since conceding, Cuomo, 67, was spotted walking through Manhattan alongside his daughter, Michaela Kennedy-Cuomo, reflecting on his campaign and what he believes are troubling trends within his party.

“I’m very proud of the effort that we ran. It was an important message and an important campaign,” Cuomo told The Post. “I think New Yorkers heard us … I think this city, the Democratic Party, is headed down a dangerous road, and the campaign was about pointing out the issues and the potential pitfalls, and I think it worked very well.”

Cuomo, who mounted an independent campaign after losing the Democratic primary in June, received 42% of the vote in election, a surprisingly strong showing for a third-party candidate. However, his loss to 34-year-old progressive Zohran Mamdani marked the end of one of the most high-profile political comebacks in recent New York history.

During his concession speech in Midtown Manhattan, Cuomo was briefly interrupted by supporters booing Mamdani’s name. He immediately stepped in to calm the crowd.

“That is not right, and that is not us,” he said firmly. “Tonight was their night. And as they start to transition to government, we will all help any way we can because we need our New York City government to work. We want it to work for all New Yorkers because our city is the greatest city in the world.”

The crowd erupted into applause as Cuomo called for unity. “We will unite for New York City because we love New York City,” he added.

Applause continued throughout the speech as Cuomo thanked his campaign team and supporters for having “made it a real race” despite his defeat in the Democratic primary.

He cautioned, however, that Mamdani had made “promises that we know cannot be met.” Still, Cuomo struck an optimistic tone about the city’s future. “This city has always thrived because of its diversity, its unity, and its resilience,” he said. “No matter who leads it, that spirit can’t be broken.”

A new era begins in New York politics

Cuomo’s loss marks the latest chapter in a turbulent political career that saw him rise from state attorney general to three-term governor before resigning amid scandal in 2021.

His reemergence as an independent candidate was widely viewed as an attempt to rehabilitate his public image and challenge the party’s progressive shift.

As Zohran Mamdani prepares to take office as New York City’s youngest and first Muslim mayor, Cuomo’s warning about a “dangerous road” for Democrats underscores the deep ideological rift within the party, one that may define the next chapter of New York’s political landscape.
