PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: A 21-year-old man who was confronted by US Secret Service agents after entering the security perimeter of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property early Sunday was later identified as Austin Tucker Martin. Officials said the encounter occurred in the early hours of February 22 at the Palm Beach estate.
Authorities confirmed that neither Trump nor first lady Melania Trump were at the property at the time, as they were in Washington, DC. Law enforcement said the situation unfolded quickly after Martin drove onto the premises.
Austin Tucker Martin’s sister died in 2023 head-on crash
Years before the Mar-a-Lago incident, Martin’s family experienced a devastating loss. His older sister, Caitlin Renea Martin, died in August 2023 at the age of 21 following a head-on collision near her family home, according to a report by The Pilot.
Caitlin was attempting to cross into a southbound lane when a Ford pickup truck, reportedly operating without headlights, struck her vehicle. The impact caused her car to spin, collide with a guardrail, and go over a barrier. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The teenage driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries and was treated.
In her obituary,Caitlin was remembered as kind and adventurous. Her family shared that she loved animals, especially her cats Meatball and Juice. They described her as someone who had a unique perspective on life and was still finding her path. She was deeply loved by her family and friends. Jacob Cade Martin is now the only surviving sibling in the family.
Martin’s mother, Melissa Martin, had posted on social media that her son was missing hours before the confrontation, asking friends to help “find my boy.” She stated he was likely driving a 2013 silver Volkswagen Tiguan.
Secret Service confronts intruder at Mar-a-Lago security perimeter
According to authorities, Martin entered the Mar-a-Lago grounds by following another vehicle through a gate at approximately 1:30 am. Once inside the secured area, agents assigned to protect the property approached him after observing that he was carrying a weapon and a gas can.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said officers instructed Martin to put down the items. Officials stated he complied with part of the command but continued advancing with the weapon. Agents then discharged their firearms. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later recovered packaging for the firearm inside Martin’s vehicle. Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed the discovery during a press briefing.
Martin’s social media accounts reportedly featured artwork focused on golf courses in North Carolina’s Sandhills region and showed limited online activity. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive as the investigation remains ongoing.
