Benny Blanco reveals the question Selena Gomez asked before going public as a couple
BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: Singer Selena Gomez once gave Benny Blanco an easy out before they made their relationship public, but the music producer said he was ready to share their love with the world.
Three years after they started dating, Blanco recalled the conversation the couple had before Gomez revealed their romance in December 2023. He also reflected on navigating life with one of the world's biggest stars, while the couple recently shared intimate details from their ultra-private 2025 wedding.
Benny Blanco recalls Selena Gomez's relationship doubts
Blanco revealed that he and Gomez kept their relationship private for about eight or nine months before confirming it publicly in December 2023.
Speaking in an interview translated from Spanish with 'El Pais,' published on July 13, he shared that Gomez wanted to make sure he was comfortable with taking their relationship into the spotlight.
"We kept our relationship private for a long time, about eight or nine months," he said. "And she asked me, 'Are you sure you want to do this? I understand if you want us to just be friends.'"
Blanco, whose real name is Benjamin Levin, said he had no doubts about making their relationship public.
"I said, 'You know what? Screw it, we're lucky because we both have friends and family we've known since before all this, and we're surrounded by a good group of people we love.'"
While married to one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world, Blanco admitted he prefers to keep his personal life private.
"I don't like to expose my life," he explained, adding, "Famous people are under constant scrutiny: if you say one thing, it's wrong, and if you say another, it's also wrong. I'd like to have more privacy."
He added that he rarely posts about his personal life on social media.
"Maybe I'll occasionally post a picture of my wife or some delicious dish I've tried, but I hardly ever post anything on my Instagram that isn't work-related."
Benny Blanco credits Selena Gomez's support
Blanco also credited Gomez with helping him navigate life in the public eye. "She's been dealing with this her whole life, So it's something we have to face together."
Gomez echoed similar feelings during a 2024 interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe.
"It's really nice to also lean on someone who understands the world that I live in," she said, adding, "I'd have to say overall it's the safest that I feel. It's been really lovely and I've only grown through it, so it's awesome."
During the Tuesday, June 23, episode of his 'Friends Keep Secrets' podcast, Blanco revealed that his mother, Sandra Levin, had predicted years earlier that Gomez would be the right person for him.
"2019, I'm shooting a video with Selena. I'm dating someone else, ok?" he recalled before adding, "My mom's on the video shoot and she says, she's just sitting there, she's like, 'Hon, you should marry Selena.'"
He continued, "And I was like, 'What?' And she was like, 'You should be dating someone like Selena,' and there was like two times in my life where I left a specific session or late video with her where I was like, 'Wow, she's so cool. She's like really cool.'"
