WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Bernie Sanders went viral across social media for staying seated amid a standing ovation during the inaugural speech of President Donald Trump.

Netizens were quick to point out that the pose that the 83-year-old progressive lawmaker from Vermont struck was very similar to how he seated himself at the 2021 inauguration of Joe Biden.

Sanders was seen seated arms crossed and bundled up in mittens and a winter coat on the steps of the US Capitol back in 2021. He was also wearing a simple blue surgical mask, owing to the then-ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Trump was sworn in as the President of the United States for the second time inside the Capitol Rotunda. Sanders was present at the venue along with other public officials and invited guests, which included VIPs like Tim Cook, Dana White, and Tucker Carlson.

The ceremony was reportedly moved indoors for the first time in 40 years because of freezing temperatures, as per the Daily Mail. As such, thousands of Trump followers who had arrived at the national capital to watch the ceremony from the National Mall were relocated to the Capital One Arena, where the event was live-streamed.

Later, Sanders took a swipe at the three of the richest men in the world attending Trump's inauguration, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg.

Taking to X, Sanders shared their image with the caption, "When I started talking about Oligarchy, many people didn't understand what I meant. Well, that's changed."

"When the 3 wealthiest men in America sit behind Trump at his inauguration, everyone understands that the billionaire class now controls our government. We must fight back," he added.
