WASHINGTON, DC: Following Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss to Donald Trump and Republicans’ gain of Senate control, Senator Bernie Sanders is placing the blame squarely on the Democratic Party.

In a social media statement on Wednesday, November 6, the Vermont senator argued that party leadership needs to have “serious political discussions” about why Latino and Black working-class voters increasingly supported Republican candidates, as reported by USA Today.

"It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them," Sanders said. "While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. And they’re right."

In his statement, Sanders listed several critical issues he believes the Biden-Harris administration has failed to adequately address, including wealth inequality, the rising cost of living, exorbitant prescription drug prices, and the lack of guaranteed medical leave.

"Will the big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real lessons from this disaster campaign? Will they understand the pain and political alienation that tens of millions of Americans are experiencing?"

"Do they have any ideas as to how we can take on the increasingly powerful Oligarchy which has so much economic and political power? Probably not," he concluded.

Though Sanders is an Independent, he has long aligned with the Democratic Party and continues to push for progressive policies like Medicare for All and an increased federal minimum wage.

Sanders’ comments reflect his ongoing frustration with the party’s direction and his insistence on bold reforms to address the needs of working-class Americans.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders successfully secured a fourth term in the US Senate after defeating Republican challenger Gerald Malloy in the 2024 election. Sanders, 83, who has represented Vermont in the Senate since 2007 and served in the US House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007, won the race by a significant margin, continuing his long-standing presence in Washington.
