Biden draws scrutiny as he vacations for free at billionaire Joe Kiani's California mansion after DNC
WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden has been rather vocal about the need for an enforceable ethics code for Supreme Court justices, yet his own actions have raised concerns about conflicts of interest.
In a nutshell, Biden's personal relationship with billionaire donor Joe Kiani has drawn scrutiny.
Joe Biden’s vacation at Joe Kiani’s estate, financial support
Following his speech at the Democratic National Convention, Joe Biden and his family took a vacation at Joe Kiani's ranch-style estate in Santa Ynez, California. According to White House officials, the first family is staying at the estate free of charge. These officials have described Kiani as merely a "friend" of the Biden family, the New York Post reported.
However, the nature of this relationship becomes a lot more complicated when one considers the eyewatering financial contributions Kiani has made to Biden’s political campaigns.
Kiani has been a major supporter of Biden, donating nearly $3 million to Biden's super PAC, foundation, and inaugural committee. Considering, House Republicans have raised concerns about the potential for undue influence on the administration.
Adding to these concerns is Kiani's appointment in September 2021 to Biden's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. This council reportedly provides guidance on policies that directly impact Kiani's medical technology company, Masimo.
Since Biden assumed office in January 2021, Masimo has secured nearly $3 million in federal contracts—something that Republicans have pointed to as a problem.
What's more? Beyond his official appointment, Kiani has enjoyed many other perks under the Biden administration. In 2022, Kiani was invited to a state dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron. This provided Kiani with valuable networking opportunities among trans-Atlantic business leaders and other global elites, per the Post.

Ethics concerns amid efforts to reform the Supreme Court
The timing of the Biden family's vacation at Joe Kiani's estate coincides with Democratic efforts to reform the Supreme Court, particularly in light of ethics concerns surrounding the justices.
This comes following the controversy involving Justice Clarence Thomas and his relationship with Republican donor Harlan Crow. Thomas came under scrutiny for accepting vacations and other gifts from Crow, whom he has described as one of his family's "dearest friends." The parallels between Thomas’s relationship with Crow and Biden’s relationship with Kiani have led to accusations of hypocrisy.
The US Office of Government Ethics, which is responsible for overseeing executive branch ethics, told Fox News that it does not "discuss specific individuals or circumstances" when asked for comment.
"The self-proclaimed most ethical and transparent administration in history strikes again," Director of the conservative nonprofit Protect the Public's Trust Michael Chamberlain told Fox News. "The Biden-Harris EPA is already doling out its Greendoggle billions to organizations with ties to the administration and its political allies. Now, we have this type of arrangement with a donor who has business before the government. Seems to be just how things get done in this administration."
In April 2022, a group of 12 House Republicans sent a letter to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Shalanda Young, voicing concerns over Biden's relationship with Kiani. The letter stressed the need to ensure that political donations are not unduly influencing the administration's decisions regarding contracts and loans.
It's worth noting that this scrutiny is not limited to Kiani alone, as Biden's relationships with other wealthy Democratic donors have also been questioned.
For instance, billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer, who manages a green energy investment fund poised to benefit from federal spending under Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, hosted the Biden family at his Lake Tahoe mansion a year ago.
Pattern of questionable vacations
The aforementioned is just one of several vacations that have raised ethical concerns, culminating in an ethics complaint by the conservative nonprofit Center for Renewing America in April. The complaint called on the Department of Justice to investigate Joe Biden for failing to disclose these free vacations, which may not qualify under exemptions provided by the Ethics in Government Act (EIGA).
The complaint by the Center for Renewing America lists several other vacations taken by the Biden family that have raised ethical questions.
These include a stay at the South Carolina beachfront mansion of Democratic donor Maria Allwin, a visit to private equity founder David Rubenstein's $39 million Nantucket mansion, and a New Year's trip to Bill and Connie Neville's private island property in the US Virgin Islands.
The Nevilles, who began sharing their home with Biden in 2015, were invited to a state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping around that time. Furthermore, the Nevilles were also guests at a White House state dinner with President Macron in December 2022, the same month Biden stayed at their mansion.
Kendra Arnold, executive director of the nonprofit Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, argued that Biden's stay at Kiani's mansion "reinforces the popular notion that individuals who give large amounts of money to politicians are rewarded with increased access and various perks that are unavailable to others."
"When, like is the case here, there is an apparent circular beneficial relationship, it is difficult to believe that, at a minimum, there has not been increased access granted," he concluded. "As a rule of thumb, our elected officials are encouraged to even avoid the appearance of conflicts of interest, and, in this case, President Biden has certainly fallen short."
