Internet lambasts Senate Democrats as they prepare to push Supreme Court ethics bill this week
WASHINGTON, DC: Senate Democrats are preparing to push forward a legislation focused on Supreme Court ethics this week.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill) announced that they will attempt to advance the ethics bill which he co-authored with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, (D-R I) through unanimous consent, according to The Hill.
New evidence will include gifts received by Justices and is unrelated to Samuel Alito's recording
A spokesperson for Durbin confirmed that the request for unanimous consent would take place on Wednesday, June 12, though it is widely expected that a Republican senator will deny consent.
“We’re planning on making a move on the floor this week to move the ethics bill for the Supreme Court,” Durbin stated, according to the outlet.
He noted that “there may be some new evidence that comes out” related to ethical concerns at the court.
This new evidence is unrelated to the recently emerged recordings of Justice Samuel Alito and his wife Martha-Ann.
“It relates to the ethical considerations from some of the justices for gifts they’ve taken and not reported,” Durbin said.
Democrats have increased pressure amid Samuel Alito's flag controversy
Democrats are urging for a floor vote on the ethics bill, particularly while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer conducts votes to document Republican positions on contentious issues.
The Supreme Court introduced a new code of ethics in November, however, Democrats argue that its effectiveness is diminished because it relies on each justice to self-enforce the code.
The Democrats have been pushing for the ethics bill after Justice Samuel Alito's flag controversy erupted.
New publications reported Alito flew an upside-down American flag over his residence in Alexandria, around the time of January 6, 2021, and President Biden’s inauguration.
With Democrats advocating for his recusal and his subsequent refusals to recuse himself from Donald Trump's SCOTUS cases, the controversy has snowballed.
Recently, Alito was recorded discussing the ideological disparities between the left and the right, which he believes are irreconcilable.
Internet reacts to Senate Democrats planning to push Supreme Court ethics bill
Netizens have sharply reacted to Senate Democrats' plan to push the Supreme Court ethics bill.
On social media platform X, opinions varied widely. "Separation of powers won’t work," commented one user.
"Separate, but equal," wrote another while a different user remarked, "Can this be seen as anything more than partisan politics interfering with the judiciary?"
"They know all of their bullshit is about to be checked so the only thing they have left is to delegitimize the court. But hell have no fury if Trump call out his judges," added the user.
Another user sarcastically questioned, "Congress cares about ethics??" One more wrote, "Cool story, they have no authority."
One more wrote in support of the bill saying it was, "Entirely appropriate." One simply expressed, "Finally!"
Can this be seen as anything more than partisan politics interfering with the judiciary? They know all of their bullshit is about to be checked so the only they have left is to delegitimize the court. But hell have no fury if Trump call out his judges.
