Biden slammed as Democratic leaders fear his presidential candidacy would be a 'drag' in NY House races
WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden's continued presence on the ballot could pose a risk to Democrats in House races, even in traditionally Democratic New York, some party leaders fear.
Prominent New York Democrats have suggested he should not seek re-election, a sentiment that came to light on Sunday, July 7.
Manhattan Representative Jerrold Nadler, the leading Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, and Joe Morelle of Rochester, the foremost Democrat on the House Committee on House Administration, were among the Democrats who suggested that the party would fare better without Biden on the ticket.
Donald Trump had a 13-point lead in key battleground suburbs
However, Biden's shortcomings as a candidate in New York were apparent even before the debacle of his debate.
A Siena College Poll published a week prior to the June 27 debate showed Biden ahead of the former Republican Donald Trump by a narrow margin of 8 points, 47% to 39%, with a significant lead of 25 points in the predominantly Democratic New York City.
In 2020, Biden had won over Trump by a margin of 23 points, according to New York Post.
Trump had a 13-point lead over Biden in the city's key battleground suburbs, with a score of 48% to 35%. These suburbs include the districts where Republicans gained seats in 2022, securing the House majority.
Biden was leading Trump by a narrow margin of just 3 points upstate, 45% to 42%, which falls within the poll's 4-point margin of error. This was prior to his widely criticized debate performance.
“If the election were held today and I’m a Democrat running in a marginal seat in New York, I’d be nervous,” said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg.
“The findings should be very concerning to Democrats running for Congress and the state Legislature in swing districts,” added Greenberg.
Hank Sheinkopf warns that Joe Biden's influence could hinder Democrats' success in suburban NY
Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf, known for his work on former President Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election campaign, stated that Biden's influence could challenge Democrats' chances of success in the suburbs of New York.
“It’s called crime, chaos, the migrant crisis and Biden,” he said. “His disastrous debate performance will increase Republican turnout and hurt Democrats even in New York.”
Sheinkopf stated that if Vice President Kamala Harris is nominated, the issue of abortion rights would become more prominent, potentially benefiting the Democrats.
A leading New York union official involved in the House races remarked that this is an additional setback for Democrats, who already faced losses down the ballot when Governor Kathy Hochul did not perform well in suburban areas in 2022, running against the Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin.
Hochul secured a narrow victory in the race, largely due to a significant margin of votes from New York City.
“There’s no question that President Biden would be a drag on the ticket for down ballot races – especially New York,” the labor source said.
Through a spokesperson, Nadler declined to comment on the contents of a private phone call with fellow House members.
Internet slams Joe Biden for running despite debate debacle
As soon as news went viral on social media, users started reacting to it. A user wrote talking about Biden, "I'm not sure he'll make it to November."
Another user added, "He will be a drag even if he gets replaced. You can't have a presidency this bad without damaging your party."
