Biden slammed as he blames Trump for abortion rights 'nightmare' on anniversary of Roe v Wade reversal
WASHINGTON, DC: On the second anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade, President Joe Biden launched a scathing attack on his 2024 presidential rival, Donald Trump, focusing on the latter's role in reshaping the nation's highest court and its consequent impact on abortion rights.
The incumbent did not mince words as he blamed the former president for the Supreme Court's Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which ended the federal legal right to an abortion.
President Joe Biden slams Donald Trump for 'ripping away' reproductive health rights
"Donald Trump is the sole person responsible for this nightmare," declared Biden in a statement issued by his reelection campaign team. He accused Trump of "ripping away" reproductive health rights by appointing three conservative justices during his presidency, thereby shifting the balance of the court.
Biden elaborated, "Two years ago today, Donald Trump’s Supreme Court majority ripped away the fundamental freedom for women to access the health care they need and deserve."
He claimed, "The consequences have been devastating: in states across the country, Trump’s allies have enacted extreme and dangerous abortion bans — many with no exception for rape or incest — that are putting women’s lives at risk and threatening doctors with jail time."
The Biden administration is using the anniversary as a strategic moment to galvanize support among Democrats, especially in the lead-up to the November election. Vice President Kamala Harris is leading the charge with over 50 events in key battleground states to champion reproductive rights.
Biden's statement continued, "Donald Trump is the sole person responsible for this nightmare. For him, these cruel state bans are a ‘beautiful thing to watch’ — and they’re just beginning."
"This is a man who brags about overturning Roe v Wade, has called for women who access reproductive health care to be punished — and says he would rule as a dictator on day one. If given the chance, there is no question he will ban abortion nationwide, with or without the help of Congress. You don’t have to take my word for it — his advisors have already laid out the plans to do it," stressed the president.
In conclusion, Biden asserted, "I will never let that happen. Everywhere I go, I hear from people who are worried about the state of reproductive health care in America. My message to Americans is this: Kamala and I are fighting like hell to get your freedom back. And we won’t stop until we restore the protections of Roe v. Wade for every woman in every state."
On that dark June day two years ago, the Supreme Court ripped away the Constitutional right to choose, and practically dared American women to be heard.

In contrast, Trump has reiterated that reproductive rights should be determined by individual states. Over the weekend, the presumptive GOP nominee spoke at the Faith and Freedom Coalition's Road to Majority conference, where he touted his administration’s achievements.
“We have also achieved what the pro-life movement fought to get for 49 years, and we’ve gotten abortion out of the federal government and back to the states. The way everybody and all legal scholars always said it should be," touted Trump.
The Dobbs decision has led to significant changes in state-level abortion laws, with more than 20 Republican-led states imposing stringent restrictions. Biden's team is banking on the issue of reproductive rights to mobilize voters and potentially swing the tightly contested November 5 election in their favor.
Jennifer Klein, chair of the White House Gender Policy Council, told reporters on Monday, June 24, that Biden will focus on passing legislation to restore Roe v Wade if reelected, as per Global News.
As the election approaches, national polls indicate a tight race between Biden and Trump, with Trump holding an edge in crucial battleground states. Economic issues, such as inflation, where Trump scores higher with voters, will also play a significant role. The abortion debate, however, remains at the forefront, with both sides rallying their bases around the issue.
Internet reacts as President Joe Biden attacks Donald Trump over his role in the overturning of Roe v Wade
Biden’s pointed criticism of Trump on abortion rights appeared to backfire on social media, with many accusing the former of misleading voters.
"Quit saying abortion rights were taken away by Trump and the SCOTUS. The decision was given back to the states and you know it. Gas light much?" said one and another added, "Playing the abortion fear game isn’t going to get you re-election. But I do like your sense of desperation."
A person argued, "Biden was president when it was overturned. They haven't passed anything to change it back. Trump is at most vaguely involved." "Roe vs Wade was never Constitutional it’s up to individual States," opined someone else.
An individual expressed, "Unlike the first and second amendments, abortion is not an enumerated right. Anything not enumerated in the bill of rights is relegated to the individual states to decide. A sitting US president shouldn’t need a welder to explain this to him."
