TAMPA, FLORIDA: President Joe Biden embarked on a politically charged journey to Florida on Tuesday, April 23, making a bold move to confront his predecessor, former president Donald Trump, on the contentious issue of abortion.

Stepping onto Trump's home turf, Biden addressed a crowd of supporters at a community college in Tampa, just a week before Florida enforces a ban on abortions beyond six weeks of pregnancy.

Joe Biden calls out Donald Trump's role in abortion policies

In his address, Biden directly targeted Trump, who he labeled as the primary catalyst for the aftermath of overturning Roe v Wade, attributing to him the "cruelty and chaos" that ensued.

Biden didn't mince words, referring to Trump's characterization of the Dobbs decision as a "miracle" and jokingly expressing curiosity about the contents of the Bible Trump has been promoting for $60, The Hill reported.

"He described the Dobbs decision as a miracle," Biden said of Trump. "I think it's coming from that Bible he's trying to sell. I almost wanted to buy one just to see what the hell's in it," he quipped.

“Folks, it was no miracle. It was a political deal … he made with the evangelical base of the Republican Party to look past his moral and character flaws in exchange for his commitment to appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would overturn Roe," the President added.

The roots of this clash trace back to January, when Trump, in a Fox News town hall ahead of the Iowa caucuses, boasted about the "miracle" of ending the constitutional right to abortion.

However, he also cautioned against extreme bans, warning that they were leading to electoral losses for Republicans.

Biden seized upon this, highlighting Trump's concern about being held accountable by voters.

"Donald Trump is worried that voters are going to hold him accountable for the cruelty and chaos he's created," Biden said. "The bad news for Trump is we are going to hold him accountable," he continued. "We are - he should be held accountable."

In the battleground state of Florida, where voters have a chance to overturn the impending abortion ban through Amendment 4 in November. This amendment proposes to allow abortions up to the point of viability, typically around 24 weeks, requiring 60% support from voters.

Biden's campaign sees this as an opportunity to energize pro-choice voters and potentially flip the state.

Florida, a pivotal state in national elections, has been a closely contested territory. Trump secured a 3.4-point victory in 2020, building on his 1.6-point margin against Hillary Clinton in 2016.

"I think Florida is in play, nationally," Biden said after his remarks. "This election is a basic old-fashioned election," the president continued, explaining that it will all be about turnout.

The implications of Florida's abortion law extend beyond state borders, with Biden's campaign arguing that it would effectively create a de facto abortion ban across the southeastern United States.

According to reports, nearly 7,000 women traveled from out of state to receive abortions in Florida last year, highlighting the broader impact of state-level legislation on reproductive rights.

Social media reactions

While Biden took center stage in Florida, reactions flooded social media, particularly in response to his jibe at Trump's biblical references.

"Dark Brandon is on fire today!" one posted on X.

"A miracle that took over 50 years in the making. Uncle Mitch maneuvered two seats they shouldn’t have had. Also, the Federalist Society has been working diligently to buy & control courts to push forward their agenda," another wrote.

"Dark Brandon really bringing the heat today. Trump could probably use some, you know it's very cold in that courtroom, I hear," a comment read.

"I love how Biden is treating Trump like a private citizen on trial and not a presidential candidate. This is how it's done, looking at you, mainstream media," someone else offered.

"Trump selling bibles fits perfectly with the view that his support is based on enabling the hate and xenophobia of his base. And in my mind, that is further corroborated by the support that he has for violating the gag order. The base themselves want the same freedom to threaten and intimidate people they don't like. They are bullies on the order of MTG and hope that trump back in power will create an America where they can bully others themselves while hiding behind a bible. Power corrupts," another chimed in.
