'I get no credit for it': Trump drops new detail in Nobel Prize saga

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump revived his Nobel Peace Prize grievance in the Oval Office, saying his role in ending eight wars remains unrecognized while recalling a gesture from the prize's recipient.

Trump said Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who received the award, told him nobody in Nobel's history deserved it more than him.

The comments came during an interaction with reporters on Friday, September 4, as Trump signed an executive order requiring country-of-origin labeling on foreign beef.

Trump says his eight wars claim went unrecognized

Trump has tied his Nobel grievance to his claim that he helped end eight conflicts since his second term began. 

The White House has previously listed these as conflicts between Israel and Hamas, Israel and Iran, Pakistan and India, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Thailand and Cambodia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Serbia and Kosovo, according to the BBC. 

“Because I ended eight wars, I hope you're proud of me. I ended eight wars. I get no credit for it. I ended eight wars. Did I get the Nobel Prize? No,” Trump said.

Trump then described Machado's reaction after receiving the award. 

“Although the person that got it was nice enough that she gave it to me,” he said, adding that she told him, “Nobody in the history of the Nobel Prize deserves it more than you.”

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Machado last October. The Nobel Foundation later said the award could not “even symbolically, be passed on or further distributed.”

Machado, who has praised Trump, met Trump at the White House in January this year and gave him her medal.

The gesture became part of Trump's account of why he believes he deserved the prize.

Trump has tied the prize to his peace claims

Trump's grievance over the prize has extended into his dealings with Norway. 

In January, he told Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that he no longer felt obliged to think only about peace after not receiving the award.

“Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,” Trump wrote to Støre, while adding that peace would “always be predominant.”

Støre had explained that an independent committee, rather than Norway's government, awards the prize. 

Trump later insisted that “Norway totally controls it [the Nobel Prize] despite what they say.”

Trump told Støre, “I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States.”

Greenland became part of the dispute

The Nobel dispute unfolded alongside Trump's demands for “Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”

Trump had questioned why Denmark had a “right of ownership” over Greenland and said, “The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”

Denmark warned that US military action in Greenland would spell the end of NATO, while European allies sent small numbers of troops there in what the BBC described as a symbolic move. 

Trump subsequently threatened tariffs against eight NATO allies, including the UK, if they opposed his proposed takeover of Greenland.

Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had said any decision about Greenland's future status belonged to Greenland's people and Denmark, and called the use of tariffs against allies “wrong.”
