Trump predicts UK PM’s resignation, says Starmer has ‘failed badly’
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid mounting leadership crisis in the United Kingdom, President Donald Trump predicted that UK PM Keir Starmer would soon resign from his post.
Trump’s statement comes amid speculation that Keir Starmer is set to resign within a matter of days as political challenges for him and the labour party was growing.
Trump says Starmer will resign soon as he failed
Donald Trump, in a scathing Truth Social post on Sunday, June 21, claimed that Prime Minister Keir Starmer would step down, blaming what he described as failures in immigration and energy policy.
Trump claimed that Starmer contributed to the energy crisis at home through his policy in the North Sea.
Starmer government implemented a policy to halt granting new oil and gas exploration licenses in the North Sea.
The comments came as Starmer faces growing political pressure at home, though senior Labour figures have pushed back on suggestions that his resignation is imminent.
"Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA ?OIL!). I wish him well."
Speculation over Starmer's future intensified over the weekend after his labor rival Andy Burnham's decisive victory in the Makerfield by-election, with several media reports suggesting the prime minister is considering his options amid growing discontent within the ruling Labour Party.
UK Minister rubbishes immediate resignation reports
However, Business Secretary Peter Kyle on Sunday dismissed reports suggesting that the Prime Minister was preparing to resign immediately.
“I have nothing to believe that they are true. I am seeing a lot of speculation out there," Kyle told Sky News.
At the same time, Kyle acknowledged that Starmer was reflecting on the situation confronting him.
"Today, as in every other day I've ever known Keir, he is out there working hard. At the same time, he is also trying to create the space where he can think and reflect on the political realities and challenges - and the opportunities - that are before us," he said.
The comments come as questions continue to grow about Starmer’s leadership following recent political setbacks and the emergence of potential challengers within the Labour Party.
Burnham’s election adds to pressure
Andy Burnham’s election victory, securing a seat in Parliament on Friday, June 19, intensified the pressure on Starmer, as Burnham can launch a formal bid for the Labour leadership if he chooses to do so.
Burnham has long been viewed as a possible rival to Starmer, and recent polling among Labour Party members suggests he would be a strong contender in any leadership contest.
Starmer’s leadership has come under increasing scrutiny following Labour’s disappointing performance in May’s local elections, where the party suffered a series of setbacks.
The results fueled fresh concerns within Labour ranks about the party’s direction under his leadership.
