Bill Maher confronts Lara Trump on presidential pardons and the DOJ’s pursuit of political rivals
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Bill Maher seemingly agreed that the FBI raid on Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate was "over the top," handing a rare rhetorical victory to Lara Trump during a tense debate about the weaponization of the Justice Department.
In the latest episode of his 'Club Random' podcast, released on Monday, November 24, the comedian squared off with the RNC co-chair regarding the president's use of power.
While Maher pressed Lara on controversial pardons and the targeting of political enemies, the conversation took a surprising turn when Maher admitted that the aggressive tactics used against the former president crossed a line.
Bill Maher grills Lara Trump on 'friend of the president' treatment
Maher opened the offensive by questioning the recent pardon of former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, citing a 60 Minutes report that suggested the crypto mogul had "enriched" the Trump family.
"It looks like you get one treatment if you’re a friend of the president and one treatment if you don’t," Maher charged.
The host then pivoted to the DOJ’s previous pursuit of mortgage fraud cases against Democrats like Rep Eric Swalwell (D-Calif) and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Maher argued that digging into 40-year-old mortgage applications to find a "wrong box" checked was a clear example of political retribution.
"I don’t even like this guy, Congressman Eric Swalwell," Maher joked, but insisted that going after him for minor clerical errors was excessive.
"If you’re going to do that, let’s go through everybody’s mortgage loan, because I think you’ll find some people on your side who might have done that," he stated.
Lara Trump defends family as most 'scrutinized' in history
Lara Trump rejected the premise that her father-in-law was uniquely vindictive. Instead, she framed the Trump family as the true victims of a weaponized justice system.
"I can promise you this. Our family has been scrutinized, attacked, under a microscope. I would probably argue more than any family," she told Maher.
Lara Trump absolutely torched Bill Maher and he wasn’t ready for it. She laid out the truth every American already knows. When Maher countered that scrutiny comes with the presidency, Lara argued that the aggression toward Donald Trump was unprecedented compared to his predecessors.
"They didn’t go after Obama and Clinton in an aggressive way," she noted. "When did you see Obama and Clinton’s residences, personal private property raided by the FBI? When did they have indictments against them to put them in jail for the rest of their life?"
Bill Maher claimed FBI tactics were 'over the top'
In a moment that validated long-standing complaints of Trump supporters, Maher agreed with Lara's assessment of the 2022 raid on Mar-a-Lago.
"I agree on the uh… don’t junk go into somebody’s bathroom," Maher admitted, referring to the photos of classified documents stored at the estate. "Yes, that was over the top."
Lara seized on the agreement, emphasizing, "It was a little over the top," to which Maher reiterated, "Over the top."
Bill Maher claimed Trump’s '11,000 votes' call was a smoking gun
Despite the concession, Maher tried to draw a line in the sand regarding the 2020 election.
He claimed that the reason Obama and Clinton weren't prosecuted was because they "never got on the phone and said, 'I need you to find me 11,000 votes.'"
"That is as close to a smoking gun as I can imagine," Maher insisted, warning against the US becoming "one of those South American countries" where political opponents were perpetually jailed.
However, Lara stood her ground, maintaining that the relentless pursuit of her family - from raids to indictments - was a unique chapter in American history.
