Whoopi Goldberg shuts down ‘The View’ crowd booing Ted Cruz: ‘We are respectful’
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Whoopi Goldberg had a message for ‘The View’ audience after audible boos broke out when Republican Sen Ted Cruz was mentioned on the show. The moment came as the ABC daytime talk show opened Hot Topics by discussing the Republican Midterm Convention in Texas on Wednesday night.
Goldberg noted that Cruz, who was set to appear as a guest on the show, would be at the convention. That was enough to draw a reaction from some people in the audience.
“Ah-ah, no, no. You know what? Look…” Goldberg said as she turned toward the crowd.

Whoopi Goldberg asks ‘The View’ audience to stay respectful
Goldberg then reminded the audience of the idea behind ‘The View’, pointing back to the show's creator, Barbara Walters.
“This is a place where Barbara Walters made sure that anybody who wanted to come and have a good conversation could come,” Goldberg said.
She explained that the show was meant to bring people together for conversations even when the hosts or audience members did not see eye to eye.
“So we want people to come, and we want to engage them,” she continued. “We don't agree with them always. We don't jell with them always, but we are respectful and I know you will be too.”
Whoopi Goldberg recalls Barbara Walters’ vision for ‘The View’
Goldberg's response also comes as ‘The View’ celebrates a major milestone. The daytime talk show is now entering its 30th season, giving her comments about Walters' original vision added weight.
Rather than allowing the audience reaction to take over the discussion, Goldberg used the moment to remind viewers why people with different opinions are invited onto the show in the first place.
She later added a lighter comparison while talking about the things people sometimes feel the need to say out loud.
“Sometimes you know stuff… It's like a burp. It comes up and so just swallow it back down,” Goldberg said.
‘The View’ returns for Season 30 with new guest lineup
‘The View’ kicked off Season 30 on Tuesday after a month-long hiatus. Goldberg returned as moderator alongside Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro.
The new season is also bringing a number of high-profile guests to the daytime talk show.
This September, the co-hosts will be joined by Jessica Lange, Andrew Garfield, Sarah Paulson, Billie Lourd and Maisie Williams.
The cast of ‘East of Eden’, including Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist, will also appear with executive producer Zoe Kazan.
Former co-host Sherri Shepherd is also set to return to ‘The View’ as a guest.
