Bill Maher reveals why Trump assassination attempt is his ‘favorite day of 2024’
WASHINGTON, DC: Bill Maher has stirred up controversy with his recent comments about the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump.
While Maher initially condemned the attack, he has since revealed that he considers the event his "favorite day of 2024." This statement emerged during an appearance on Matt Friend’s podcast, 'Friends In High Places'.
Maher finds dark humor in Trump shooting but draws the line at inappropriate jokes
According to the Daily Beast, Bill Maher, known for his sharp humor, expressed that he found a bit of dark humor in the incident because Donald Trump survived. He clarified that his sentiment would have been different if Trump had been killed, stating, “It would be different if he got killed.”
Reflecting on the situation, Maher commented, “A guy shoots Trump, the guy behind him gets shot and killed,” referring to Corey Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter who was fatally shot.
He added, “That’s so Trump. It’s so on brand... it’s always somebody else holding the bullet or the bag.” Two other rallygoers were also seriously injured before the shooter was killed by authorities.
Despite his dark humor, Maher acknowledged that some responses to the attack crossed ethical lines.
He condemned any jokes that might suggest the attack’s failure was unfortunate, saying, “There will be people who will do jokes, comments [along the lines of] ‘What a shame they missed.’ It’s not right. Nobody is more against Trump being president than me but that is not something you fool around with.”
Bill Maher quickly adapts show material after shooting
On the night of July 14, while performing in Minneapolis, Bill Maher argued that the shooting had caused considerable damage to the left. Authorities have confirmed that the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was a registered Republican, though his motives remain unclear.
Maher recounted his initial reaction to the news of the shooting and how it forced him to quickly adapt his material. “Soon as the car pulls up at the hotel, before we got the bags out of the back, the guy from the hotel came up and said Trump's been shot. I was like ‘What?’ And he said, ‘But I think he’s okay,’ and he showed me the thing on the phone.”

Maher immediately began rewriting his show’s opening to address the shooting, stating, “I was like okay, in two hours I’m going to write this whole new ten minute thing about it.”
He expressed satisfaction with his revised set, noting, “I was glad I staked my opinion on that, and we got it out virally which is great.” Maher also mentioned that he was relieved Trump survived, adding, “But the other reason I said I'm glad that he’s okay is because now I can keep doing jokes about him,” because, as he put it, “I want to.”
