WASHINGTON, DC: Political commentator Bill Maher firmly dismissed claims that he left the Democratic Party, revealing on his ‘Club Random’ podcast on Saturday, June 21, that he was never actually a Democrat to begin with.

During a candid conversation with actor Esai Morales, Maher shared his evolving views on the party, adding fuel to the ongoing discussion as he continues to voice growing criticism of the Democrats.

Bill Maher says he 'never was a Democrat to begin with'

Bill Maher clarified that he never left the Democratic Party because, in his words, he was never actually a member.

In his podcast conversation with actor Esai Morales, Maher explained, "I never was a Democrat to begin with." He went on to say, "I always like caucus with the Democrats and I generally vote for them."

Maher also shared his anticipation of a future when the Democratic Party might become as “insane” as the Republican Party. "I think, always vote for them, but I always look at it and like no, I'm gonna actually make up my mind, they just always are less scary and insane than the Republicans, but I wait for the day when it evens out," he said.

He acknowledged that the Democrats have become increasingly more radical, which he sees reflected in current political debates.

He added, “We're approaching that because they have gotten crazier, and that's a lot of what you're referencing. But I never said I left the party 'cause I wasn't there to begin with."

During their conversation, actor Esai Morales earlier mentioned that he had heard Maher claim the Democratic Party had "left" him.

Maher quickly corrected this, saying, "[I] didn’t say that," and explained that Morales was mixing up what others have said about leaving political parties. “I know myself better than you,” Maher added, "You're putting a title on something that somewhat accurately expresses my point of view."

Maher has been increasingly vocal in his criticism of the Democratic Party. Just the day before, he called on Democrats to take action against the daytime talk show 'The View', specifically targeting Whoopi Goldberg after she compared the experiences of Black Americans to those of Iranian women living under their regime, as per Fox News.

Additionally, Maher recently echoed concerns raised by Senator John Fetterman about how Democrats’ support for anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles could backfire politically.

Maher warned that campaign ads featuring such protests, including imagery like a Mexican flag and a burning Waymo vehicle, could ultimately benefit President Trump.
