LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: At the 98th Academy Awards held on Sunday, March 15, actor Billy Crystal delivered an emotional tribute honoring his close friend of many decades, renowned director Rob Reiner, and his wife, Michele Reiner.
The tribute remembered the couple’s creative achievements, their work together, and the lasting impact of Reiner’s films. Crystal also reflected on their influence beyond Hollywood and the tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths.

During the ceremony, Crystal highlighted some of Reiner’s most iconic films, including 'The Princess Bride,' 'When Harry Met Sally,' and 'A Few Good Men.' Reflecting on the significance of Reiner’s work, Crystal told the audience that the director’s movies would endure for generations.
“My friend Rob’s movies will last for lifetimes, because they were about what makes us laugh and cry, and what we aspire to be,” Crystal said. He also spoke about the impact Michele had on Rob’s life and career, "And when Michele Singer entered his life, they were unstoppable."
Crystal continued, "A gifted photographer, she not only produced films with Rob, but it was her energy that had them working tirelessly to fight social injustice in the country that they both love."
He further noted how the Reiners "became the driving force in the landmark decision for marriage equality."

Reflecting on the loss, Crystal said, “Their loss is immeasurable.” He added that Rob had always valued the audience who connected with his work.
“And to the millions who have enjoyed his films all these years, I want you to know, here and around the world, how many times Rob told me that it meant everything to him that his work meant something to you,” Crystal added.
Crystal ended his tribute by referencing an iconic line from 'The Princess Bride.' “For us who had the privilege of working with and knowing him and loving him, all we can say is, buddy, what fun we had storming the castle,” he said.
Following the speech, Crystal was joined on stage by several of Rob’s notable collaborators, including Christopher Guest, Jerry O’Connell, Michael McKean, Fred Savage, and others. The group linked hands as they honored their friend.
Rob and Michele were fatally stabbed in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. According to the Los Angeles County medical examiner, the couple died from “multiple sharp force injuries.” Their son, Nick Reiner, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges and is being held without bail.
