Rob and Michele Reiner autopsy records blocked from release amid investigation
BRENTWOOD, LOS ANGELES: The autopsy reports for Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, have been blocked from public release as their deaths remain under active investigation, officials confirmed.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office explained that the restriction was imposed at the request of the Los Angeles Police Department and approved by a judge.
While certain details had previously been made public, authorities said that no further information would be released until further notice.
The development comes as criminal proceedings continue against the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, in connection with their deaths.
Court order halts release of autopsy records
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office announced that a “security hold” has been placed on the autopsy reports for both Rob and Michele Reiner.
According to the office, the hold was requested by the LAPD and approved by a judge because the deaths are part of an ongoing investigation.
“While the cause and manner of death were previously released on these cases, due to the court order, the information is no longer available,” the Medical Examiner’s Office said in a statement.
“No other case information or records, including the Medical Examiner report, can be released or posted on the website until further notice,” the statement added.
As a result of the order, both cases have been removed from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s public database.
Court documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times show that a Los Angeles Superior Court judge signed the order, which bars the release of investigative information, photographs, and reports related to the deaths.
The Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that it received the court order but declined to provide additional details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The restriction marks a reversal from earlier disclosures, when officials had released limited information about the cause and manner of death before the security hold was imposed.
Death certificates released as criminal case proceeds
Before the autopsy reports were sealed, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released the death certificates for Rob and Michele Reiner on December 23.
According to the documents, the couple died within “minutes” of sustaining “multiple sharp force injuries” inflicted with a “knife, by another.”
The records also show that the Reiners’ bodies were cremated at Mount Sinai Mortuary.
The couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14. Their son, Nick Reiner, was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances in connection with their deaths.
He is currently being held without bail. If convicted on all charges, Nick Reiner could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or potentially the death penalty. His arraignment is scheduled for January 7.
