WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Byron Donalds asserted that Republican lawmakers thwarted the bipartisan border security bill earlier this year based on "what was being reported on social media," as per Mediaite.

In February, the congressional GOP killed the long-awaited border bill endorsed by President Joe Biden and prepared by Sen James Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma, that aimed to resolve the worsening crisis at the US southern border.

Former President Donald Trump, who was critical of his successor's border policy, had pressured the GOP Senators to kill the legislation to prevent a legislative success for Biden ahead of a crucial presidential rematch. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell permitted GOP lawmakers to vote against the bill at the time, claiming the "politics on this have changed."

In an interview on NewsMax on Friday, June 21, Donalds shared a different reason for the GOP legislator's decision to kill the border bill, and it was social media and not Trump.

Host Carl Higbie pressed the potential Trump running mate about the issue of immigration, a focal point of the upcoming presidential debate between Biden and Trump.

"He's gonna say that, 'Oh, the Senate bill was good, but Donald Trump blocked it'," the Florida Republican said.

"That's a lie. When the elements of the Senate bill were being leaked on X [formerly Twitter], House Republicans from Speaker Johnson on down, we rejected the bill based upon what we were being– what was being reported on social media," he added.

In addition, Donalds claimed that President Biden and the Democratic lawmakers failed to resolve the immigration crisis when they had a majority in both the House and the Senate but only focused on it when the election year started.

"The Democrats want to use this for political purposes," the Trump VP hopeful said. "They do not want solutions because they've had opportunities to bring solutions, and they have not done it."

Internet rips Byron Donalds for saying GOP killed border bill based on social media reports

Netizens blasted the Florida congressman as he claimed the congressional GOP blocked the long-anticipated bipartisan border bill under the influence of social media information.

A user wrote, "Not a great strategy for lawmakers!" Meanwhile, another argued, "The man is not qualified to be in the house let alone be Vice President."

"He's lying. And that is poor due diligence to rely on info from social media when you are in Congress with a staff that taxpayers are providing. @ByronDonalds," added a user.

Another response read, "Another false MAGA claim. They rejected the Bill because Daddy Donald told them not to vote on it."

Another person said, "Explains everything… So you never actually read what was In the bill… pretty much what republicans do with everything… Resign now!"

An individual wrote, "Hmmm Reading social media rather than the bill? Reading social media rather than respecting your colleagues who wrote the bill? I am sorry that sounds woefully pathetic, even ignorant. You weren’t elected to sit in your office & legislate via social media. Vote out these fools!"

"@ByronDonalds if you can’t do your job like a real person and get your facts from actual people who know what they are talking about then you shouldn’t be in congress. Resign. @RepDonaldsPress," someone else fumed.

Another user said, "This guy is a liar. The only social media he monitors is Truth Social."
