WASHINGTON, DC: Americans who will be traveling, studying away from home, working in another state or serving in the military do not necessarily have to miss the 2026 midterm elections.

Voters who are away from their usual voting location can use absentee or mail-in voting options, while military and overseas voters have additional protections under federal law. The 2026 general election is scheduled for November 3.

The process depends on where a voter is registered and why they are away from home. Election officials recommend checking registration status, requesting a ballot early and following the instructions provided with it.

For voters who are overseas or serving in the military, federal programs offer additional ways to register and receive ballots electronically.

Can I vote while away during the 2026 midterms?

Being away from your usual home does not automatically prevent you from voting.

The US Election Assistance Commission says absentee or mail-in voting may be available to voters who cannot be at their polling place on Election Day.

Depending on the state, qualifying circumstances may include traveling outside the community, attending college away from home, illness, disability or serving in the military. Some states allow any voter to request a mail ballot, while others have specific eligibility requirements.

The first step is to check your voter registration and identify the election office handling your ballot. Voters can use the EAC's state election information to find the relevant rules and deadlines.

Can college students vote away from home?

College students who attend school away from their usual home may have absentee or mail-in voting options.

The EAC specifically lists being a college student away from home as a circumstance that may qualify a voter for an absentee ballot in states that require an excuse.

Students should determine where they are registered and follow the instructions provided by that jurisdiction rather than assuming they must travel home to vote.

Students who have moved or changed their voting residence should also check whether their registration needs to be updated before requesting a ballot.

Can I vote by mail while traveling?

Voters who will be away from their usual community on Election Day may be able to vote by mail rather than returning home.

The EAC lists traveling outside a voter's community on Election Day as an example of a circumstance that may qualify for absentee voting in some states.

Voters should request their ballots through the election office where they are registered and provide the address where they will be staying if the application requires it.

Once the ballot arrives, voters should follow all the instructions on the ballot and return envelope. Some jurisdictions may require a witness or notary, while others may offer drop boxes or alternative return options.

How can I request a mail-in ballot?

Start by checking your state's election website or contacting the local election office.

The EAC recommends that voters review the instructions for requesting and returning a mail ballot and pay close attention to the applicable deadlines.

Once the ballot arrives, voters should complete all the required information and check whether postage, a witness signature or any other certification is required.

Voters should also allow enough time for their ballots to reach the election office. According to the EAC, the US Postal Service recommends mailing a ballot at least one week before the state's deadline.

Voters who know they will be away from home should not wait until the last minute to request a ballot.

There is no single nationwide deadline for requesting an absentee ballot. The applicable deadline is determined by the state or local election office where the voter is registered.

After requesting a ballot, voters should allow sufficient time for it to arrive, be completed and returned before the deadline. Some states also provide online ballot tracking, allowing voters to confirm whether their ballots have been received.

Can military families vote while stationed away?

Military voters and eligible family members have additional protections under federal law.

The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) protects the voting rights of active-duty members of the uniformed services, eligible dependents, members of the Merchant Marine and other covered groups, as well as US citizens living overseas.

Military voters can use the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) to register to vote and request an absentee ballot.

According to Vote.gov, the FPCA is available to service members stationed in the US but away from their voting jurisdiction, as well as those stationed overseas.

Federal law also requires states to provide covered military and overseas voters with electronic ballot access and send ballots at least 45 days before federal elections.

Can Americans abroad vote in the 2026 midterms?

US citizens living outside the country can vote in the 2026 midterm elections if they meet the eligibility requirements of their voting state.

According to Vote.gov, this includes Americans who have moved abroad, students studying overseas and US citizens working outside the country. They can use the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) to register to vote and request an absentee ballot in one step.

The voting residence listed on the FPCA is generally the last US address where the voter lived before moving abroad. This address is different from the voter's current mailing address and helps election officials determine the appropriate ballot.

Overseas voters may receive their ballots electronically or by mail, depending on the options available in their state. Some states also allow completed ballots to be returned by email or fax.

What if my mail-in ballot never arrives?

Military and overseas voters have an additional backup option if their absentee ballot does not arrive in time.

The Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB) can be used as an emergency backup ballot. According to Vote.gov, overseas voters whose paper ballots will not arrive in time can use the FWAB, although some states require voters to have already requested an absentee ballot.

Military and overseas voters can also use the Federal Voting Assistance Program to check state-specific requirements, find election office information and access voting assistance.

Where can voters find reliable election information?

For voters who are away from home, the most reliable source of information is the election office responsible for the jurisdiction where they are registered.

The US Election Assistance Commission (EAC) provides links to state election websites and information about absentee, mail-in and early voting.

Americans living abroad or serving in the military can use the Federal Voting Assistance Program for state-specific voting instructions, deadlines and ballot assistance. Vote.gov also provides information for Americans voting from outside the country.

With the November 3, 2026, midterm elections approaching, voters who expect to be away from home should check their registration status and ballot options early rather than waiting until Election Day.
