MANASSAS, VIRGINIA: The Prince William County Office of Elections in northern Virginia has confessed to an underreporting error in the 2020 presidential election results on Thursday, January 11.

The error resulted in a margin of victory for President Joe Biden over Donald Trump that was 4,000 votes lower than reported.

This admission comes after the discovery of discrepancies in vote counts as part of a criminal case in 2022.

Eric Olsen, the current registrar of the county, has clarified that the errors did not significantly impact the outcome of any race, according to WTOP News.

Although the counts were also off for the US Senate and US House of Representatives races, the discrepancies in these cases were less significant.

Olsen attributes the underreporting to “a lack of proper planning, a difficult election environment, and human error.”

The Virginia Attorney General’s office had previously filed charges against the former registrar, Michele White, however, they have since dropped these charges.

What did authorities say about underreporting errors in the county?

The recent disclosure of errors in the vote-counting process in Virginia sheds light on the extent of the inaccuracies that were present in the 2020 election.

These errors, as revealed on Thursday, involved the overreporting of votes for Donald Trump and the underreporting of votes for other candidates, including Joe Biden, Mark Warner, and Robert Wittman.

In the presidential race, it was discovered that Biden was shorted by 1,648 votes, while Trump’s count was overreported by 2,327 votes.

Although these errors resulted in a margin of victory that was off by 3,975 votes, they did not significantly impact the outcome of the election, as Biden had already won by a wide margin of over 450,000 votes in Virginia and over 60,000 votes in Prince William County.

Similarly, in the US Senate race, Democrat Mark Warner was found to have been shorted by 1,589 votes, while Republican Daniel Gade was shorted by 107 votes.

The final outcome of this race was not affected by these errors, as Warner had already won by a wide margin of over 500,000 votes.

Finally, in a US House race, it was discovered that Republican Robert Wittman had been shorted by 293 votes.

However, this error did not impact the outcome of the race, as Wittman had already won by a wide margin of over 80,000 votes.

The details of these errors were only recently released, following an investigation into allegations of misconduct by election officials.

The charges against the official in question, Michele White, who was accused of corrupt conduct, making a false statement, and neglect of duty, were later dropped by prosecutors from the office of Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares, with little explanation.

Eric Olsen explained that the majority of errors occurred in so-called 'split precincts', in which one precinct is home to two different congressional districts.

The voting system used by the county did not distribute the presidential votes according to congressional district, which was a requirement of the state system.

The errors occurred when the county tried to align their data with the state's requirements, causing discrepancies.

Additionally, the county's validation process was found to be flawed when it was discovered that identical presidential votes were displayed for Precincts 607 and 608.

This mistake had occurred due to someone entering one precinct's data into the other by mistake, Olsen clarified.

Olsen, who replaced White as registrar and consequently reported the errors under his predecessor to state officials said, "It seemed like an obvious typo.”

Virginia's redistricting efforts have significantly reduced the number of split precincts, which caused issues in Prince William County during the 2020 elections.

Olsen, the election official, has reassured that new procedures and systems have been implemented to prevent errors, saying, “Mistakes are unfortunate but require diligence and innovation to correct. They do not reflect a purposeful attempt to undermine the integrity of the electoral process and the investigation into this matter ended with that conclusion.”

The release of this information provides an important opportunity to examine the integrity of the voting process and to identify areas for improvement.

While the errors, in this case, did not significantly impact the outcome of the election, they highlight the importance of ensuring that election officials are held accountable for their actions and that measures are put in place to prevent similar errors from occurring in the future.
