Cher responds to Michael Douglas saying Glenn Close ‘should have won’ the 1988 Oscar over her
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Cher has responded with love to Michael Douglas’ comment saying Glenn Close deserved the 1988 Oscar instead of her.
At the 60th Academy Awards ceremony, the now-80-year-old was honored with the Best Actress award for her movie ‘Moonstruck.’ At the time, Douglas’ ‘Fatal Attraction’ co-star Glenn Close was also nominated for the same category, and failed to win.

Cher declares her adoration for Michael Douglas
Decades later, appearing on a recent episode of the UK’s ‘The Graham Norton Show,’ Douglas subtly took a dig at Cher’s win.
The ‘Romancing the Stone’ actor then added during the October 30 episode, “She should have won with ‘Fatal Attraction.’ She was nominated, I believe, [for] her fourth [time for] Fatal Attraction. Cher won that year.”
Fellow guest Naomi Ackie quipped, “The shade! The shade, mate!” before Douglas asserted that Close’s performance in ‘Fatal Attraction’ remains one of “the greatest performances of all time.”
However, Cher had a sweet response to the 82-year-old actor’s criticism. A representative for the singer told Entertainment Weekly, “Cher adores Michael Douglas.”
Douglas and Close were guests on the October 30 episode of ‘The Graham Norton Show,’ where the latter shared that she’s going to be awarded an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in November.
Glenn Close is yet to win an Oscar despite eight nominations
The 79-year-old actress quipped that the upcoming honor was happening because the Academy members “probably don’t want to feel guilty anymore,” because of her multiple career Oscar nominations.

From 1983 to 2021, the veteran actress received a total of eight competitive Academy Award nominations. Her first nomination was for ‘The World According to Garp’ in the Best Supporting Actress category, and the most recent was in 2021 for ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ again in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Michael Douglas revealed Glenn Close was not the first choice for ‘Fatal Attraction’
During the same ‘Graham Norton’ interview, the veteran actor disclosed that the filmmakers of ‘Fatal Attraction’ initially thought Close was not right to play Alex Forrest’s character.
He shared, “Everybody thought that Glenn was not right for the part, and so we moved on, and her agent called and said, ‘You don’t understand, Glenn will audition.’”

Douglas further explained, “Glenn had already got three Oscar nominations for actress, and we said, ‘We can’t ask her!’ And she said, ‘She’s insisting,’ and she came in, and I ask anyone to see this tape, and she blew us away. We have never been so wrong in our lives. We remember looking at each other, feeling like total idiots. She was in total command.”
