Glenn Close says she’s ‘happy’ staying single and avoiding dating apps after divorce almost a decade ago
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Glenn Close is enjoying her life as a single woman and isn’t rushing into the dating scene.
During a candid appearance on 'The Drew Barrymore Show' on January 13, the legendary actress opened up about her post-divorce life and why she’s steering clear of dating apps.
Glenn Close embraces single life
When Drew Barrymore asked her about dating, Glenn Close, 77, shared, “No, I don’t know. I mean, I’m always up for anything, but I’m very happy right now.”
Close admitted she hasn’t tried online dating, joking, “Are you crazy? No, I’m too shy to do that.”
While Barrymore, who has dabbled in online dating, called the experience “fun,” Close emphasized she’s not actively seeking a romantic partner.
“I’m not searching,” she said. “I’m not a hugely, comfortably, social person, so I don’t leap to go to a party.”
Close divorced businessman David Evans Shaw in 2015 after nine years of marriage and has been single since.
Glenn Close’s marital history
Glenn Close, celebrated actress and seven-time Oscar nominee, has always been candid about her personal life and the lessons she’s drawn from it. Close, who married executive David Shaw in a private 2006 ceremony in Maine, lived there with him until their separation in 2015. Before Shaw, Close had been married to Cabot Wade from 1969 to 1971 and James Marlas from 1984 to 1987.
She also shares a daughter, Annie Starke Albu, with her former partner, producer John Starke.
After her divorce from Shaw, Close immersed herself in her craft, taking on the role of Joan Castleman in 'The Wife'. The film tells the story of a woman who, after decades of deferring to her husband, decides to take a stand. Close revealed that she drew from her own life experiences for the role, per OK! Magazine.
“Not completely, but in a big way, (Joan) was the mother that I observed my whole life, who basically deferred to my father for everything,” Close shared in an interview.
“He made her feel diminished. And she was not always happy. And we actually thought she’d be happier outside of the marriage. And she was married in 1945 and she said, ‘I made this vow and this is where I’m going to be.’ But she was not a fulfilled human being, it was sad," said the 'Fatal Attraction' actress.
Reflecting on her 1987 divorce, Close offered wisdom about women’s independence, “Too many women define themselves in terms of a man. I think of men and women as two different species. Katharine Hepburn said they should live next door and visit each other once in a while. Not a bad idea.”
