Christa Pike asks haunting question during botched execution, attorneys reveal
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Christa Pike’s attorneys have revealed new details about her failed execution, including a question she reportedly asked while strapped to a gurney. Pike, 50, was scheduled to die by lethal injection on September 30, but the procedure was unsuccessful, leaving her in critical condition, according to her legal team.
After spending three decades on death row for the 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer, Pike was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in 200 years. However, what was supposed to be her final hour turned into a distressing ordeal, with attorneys raising concerns about the failed attempts and the lack of communication during the procedure.

Before asking that question, Pike reportedly said, “My arm feels like it's about to burst open."
Her attorneys said the incident involved one of Pike’s biggest fears. Medical personnel had previously indicated that a blood condition could make it difficult for her to undergo the lethal injection.
The failed procedure has since raised questions about what Pike experienced inside the death chamber and how the execution unfolded.
Christa Pike’s attorneys describe her ordeal during execution
Randy Spivey of the Tennessee Office of the Post Conviction Defender described the difficulties during the procedure, saying that multiple attempts were made to administer the lethal injection.
Stephen Ferrell of the Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee said Pike had made peace with her death. However, she wanted the execution to be humane rather than prolonged.
“It was her biggest fear, not death but a prolonged death and that's what happened, minus the death,” Ferrell said.

He explained that Pike was particularly afraid of enduring a prolonged and distressing process. Her attorneys said the experience was especially difficult given her past trauma.
Her legal team also claimed the execution attempts unfolded partly in secrecy, leaving media witnesses in a dark room.
They said those present could clearly hear Pike choking and struggling.
Spivey added that he did not know when medical assistance was provided to Pike.
He also alleged that there was no way to communicate with her as the events unfolded.
Christa Pike’s lawyers call for death sentence commutation
Pike’s attorneys have called on the governor to commute her death sentence following the failed execution.
“Christa has endured punishment greater than any other person in the history of the American death penalty,” Spivey said.
Ferrell also reiterated the request, stressing that Pike’s recovery should come first and that she should have a say in what happens next.
“We want to make sure Christa recovers and has input on what she wants,” he said.
Pike’s attorneys said she did not want a stay of execution before the procedure. Instead, she wanted her death to be carried out humanely.
However, the failed attempt has left her in critical condition, according to her legal team.
Her attorneys are now awaiting her recovery while continuing to raise concerns about the events inside the death chamber.
