NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A televised meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance erupted into an all-out shouting match, leaving even CNN’s most seasoned anchors in stunned disbelief.

The heated exchange occured as Trump and Vance criticized Zelensky for being ungrateful and urged him to accept a peace deal with Russia; Zelensky countered by highlighting Russia President Vladimir Putin’s repeated ceasefire violations, illegal occupation of Crimea, and human rights abuses.

“Wow, just wow,” Dana Bash gasped as CNN cut back to the studio following the explosive exchange.

Dana Bash also took to her Instagram, adding a clip of the CNN live news along with the caption, "The Oval Office meeting between Trump, Vance, and Zelensky just devolved into a shouting match as Trump told Zelensky, "You have to be thankful. You don't have the cards.""

Christina Amanpour said, "The only person winning here from this is President Putin."

Kaitlan Collins added, "With Trump, all of his diplomacy is personal."

The drama unfolded when Vance accused Zelensky of being "disrespectful" while criticizing Vladimir Putin.

“You should be thanking the president for trying to bring an end to this conflict,” Vance snapped at the Ukrainian leader, his tone sharp.

The tension escalated as Trump, visibly seething, went even further. “You have to be thankful. You don’t have the cards,” he bellowed, his voice reverberating through the historic room.

The outburst came as he threatened to pull American support for Ukraine, a stance that sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles.

Christiane Amanpour stunned by unprecedented diplomatic clash

CNN’s international correspondent Christiane Amanpour, who has reported on some of the most tumultuous geopolitical events in modern history, was left nearly speechless.

Hands pressed to her face, she struggled to process what she had just witnessed.

“Never in the history of modern diplomacy—war, peace, whatever—have I ever, ever, ever seen anything like it,” she said, shaking her head in disbelief.

“We just have to hope that for the safety of the free world and for the American people, for the European people, for the Ukrainian people, that these two presidents are out of breath and try to iron out their differences.”

Bash, regaining her composure, offered an analysis that suggested the display might not have been entirely uncalculated.

“I’m not saying that there wasn’t genuine anger here, but he understands when the television cameras are there, as does JD Vance,” she noted, implying that Trump might have played up his fury for dramatic effect.

However, Kaitlan Collins, CNN’s top White House correspondent, pushed back against that notion. Having been in the room as the argument unfolded, she insisted there was no theatrics—just raw emotion.

“It was incredibly genuine, though,” Collins said.

“With Trump, all of his diplomacy, we know, is personal. That’s why the world leaders who have come here this week have tried to flatter him… That was not what we just saw. He was, as Zelensky typically is, straightforward in his opinions.”

Adding to the surreal moment, Collins observed that Ukrainian Ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova, had her head in her hands as the discussion spiraled out of control.

Donald Trump-Volodymyr Zelensky clash reaches new heights amid Ukraine war anniversary

The meeting marked a new low in Trump’s already fraught relationship with Zelensky, as per the Daily Beast.

Just last month, as per BBC, Trump labeled the Ukrainian leader a dictator- while refraining from using the same term for Putin—and has since sidelined him from any US-Russia peace negotiations.

The clash came on the three-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that has reshaped global politics and left thousands dead.

In the aftermath of the confrontation, Trump took to X and Truth Social, attempting to reframe the debacle.

“We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today. Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure,” he posted.

Then, in a bizarre twist, he claimed to have reached a damning conclusion about Zelensky’s approach to diplomacy.

“It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations," Trump wrote.

His post ended with a characteristic flourish, “I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”
