NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: CNN faced backlash on Monday, July 28, for reporting that the suspect in a deadly New York shooting was "possibly White", a claim that was soon disproven.

During a segment of her show 'Erin Burnett OutFront,' CNN host Erin Burnett asked, “Was his face visible? I mean, do they have any idea at this point who he is?”

CNN reports suspect in deadly New York shooting was 'possibly White'

As Erin Burnett posed a question, CNN chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst John Miller responded, "They do not know who he is. They know he is a male, possibly White."

He added, "He’s wearing sunglasses, he appears to have a mustache, and that picture has been distributed to every police officer in New York City, particularly, it has been sent to the phones of the search teams inside that building."

"Whenever they encounter a group of people, the first thing they have to figure out is that individual among these people, hiding among victims or pretending to be an office worker," Miller continued.

Burnett then repeated Miller’s claim, stating that the suspect was "male, possibly White."

However, as Miller made the statement, a surveillance photo circulating on social media clearly showed that the suspect was not White.

An hour later, the New York Post identified the man as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, the suspect in the shooting at 345 Park Avenue, Manhattan, on July 28.

Tamura was reportedly found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the incident and was found to possess a Las Vegas Concealed Firearms Permit.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura killed four people, one police officer and three civilians, before turning the gun on himself. She also confirmed that one additional person was shot and wounded, while four others sustained minor injuries while fleeing.

Before the shooting, Tamura reportedly double-parked a vehicle with Nevada plates outside the office building and stormed inside with a rifle in plain view, according to police and photos from the scene.

CNN mocked online for ‘possibly White’ claim

Several internet users slammed CNN after the network reported that the suspect in a deadly New York shooting was "possibly White," without providing any solid evidence.

One user wrote on X, "They should be sued into oblivion," while another added, "I’ve been saying for years now, CNN is an enemy of the average American Citizen."

A person stated, "They are incapable of learning from past mistakes," whereas another mentioned, "CNN is lying. His name is Shane Tamura and he's 27-years-old. And he's not a white man."

One user wrote, "CNN = Crap News Network," while another commented, "CNN is so pathetic. No wonder they have 0 ratings left."

A person also remarked, "'Possibly white'. That is like saying CNN is Possibly News," while one wrote, "Clowns at @CNN will probably get a Pulitzer prize for their coverage."
