During his conversation with host Daniel Davies, Colman Domingo revisited the moment he came out in his early 20s in the 1990s, starting with a conversation with his older brother after a night out.
“I told him that I was gay. He looked at me and was just like, ‘What?’ He just couldn’t believe it, eventually, he said, I don’t care, man. I love you anyway,” he said.
Domingo also shared how his sister reacted after learning he had told his brother first.
“She was pissed off. I said, ‘Look, yes, it was really hard for me to tell him.’ She said, ‘No, no, no. Why didn’t you tell me first?’ She was pissed off because she didn’t get the information first,” he recalled while laughing.
He added that both his mother and stepfather responded with support. His stepfather told him, “You’re a good boy and there’s nothing you can tell me that would make me stop loving you.”
Domingo said he was a shy and introverted child growing up, describing himself as “very skinny” and “very awkward,” and noting that he once struggled with a lisp before fully stepping into his public identity.
Colman Domingo shares fitness philosophy and approach to aging
Alongside his personal reflections, Domingo spoke about how he maintains his physique in his 50s. He revealed that he once explored medical guidance regarding hormone levels but decided against treatment after learning his levels were comparable to those of his teenage years.
Instead, he focuses on natural fitness, centered on cardio and training with a fitness studio designed for people over 50.
The actor said he has no interest in dramatically bulking up unless required for a role, such as a superhero film. His priority remains staying lean and comfortable in clothes due to his work in fashion.
“For the fashion world that I’m a part of, I need to look good in clothes, because I’m 6ft 2in and 183 lbs, and I can wear sample sizes, so I need to stay that way,” Domingo said.
