SPANISH FORK, UTAH: Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, made his first virtual court appearance after being captured just 33 hours following the alleged crime.

The shocking incident occurred on September 10 during a student Q&A session at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem. Kirk, 31, was answering questions from students when he was shot in the neck at around 12:20 pm local time.

Massive manhunt led to swift arrest of Tyler Robinson

The killing, which was caught on camera, sent shockwaves through the campus and drew nationwide attention. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement launched an intensive manhunt to track down the suspect.

Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the UVU campus and nearby locations, piecing together Robinson’s movements before and after the attack.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect entering the campus at approximately 11:51 am local time (17:51 GMT) on the day of the shooting. He was wearing a black shirt with an American flag at the center, along with a baseball cap and sunglasses.

Detectives noted that Robinson appeared to walk with an unusual gait, which they believe was an attempt to conceal the rifle later used in the attack by hiding it inside his trousers. This visual clue, combined with other evidence, helped investigators narrow their search area and ultimately locate the suspect.

Charges include aggravated murder, witness tampering

Robinson is facing a series of serious charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice for allegedly moving the firearm used in the killing, and obstruction of justice for disposing of clothing linked to the crime.

He has also been charged with two counts of witness tampering for allegedly instructing his roommate to delete incriminating text messages and to remain silent about the incident.

In addition, prosecutors charged Robinson with committing a violent offense in the presence of a child — one of several aggravating factors that could increase his potential sentence.

Prosecutors signal intent to seek death penalty for Tyler Robinson

In a recent filing, prosecutors confirmed they have issued a notice of their intent to seek the death penalty against Robinson.

“The decision to seek the death penalty is based on the available evidence and the circumstances and nature of the crime,” the filing stated.

Prosecutors say more evidence will be presented in the coming weeks, including forensic analysis and additional witness statements. Meanwhile, netizens are debating whether Robinson should face the death penalty.

"Should 22-year-old Tyler Robinson — arrested for assassinating Charlie Kirk — face the death penalty to send a clear message that political assassinations will never be tolerated in America? Yes or no?" asked one person on X.

Another netizen wrote, "Tyler Robinson does not seem even slightly remorseful in his first court appearance. Remember, this guy was a 4.0 GPA student. He likely thinks he is smart enough to get off without the death penalty. He’s wrong."

Others on social media also argued that Robinson deserves the death penalty. "We should have the Death Penalty happen at the same time for both Tyler Robinson and Decarlos Brown Jr," wrote an X user.

Another netizen added, "Tyler Robinson was just arraigned in court. I zoomed in on his face as the charges that come with these crimes were read to him. He shows zero regret or emotions as he’s told the State will seek the death penalty. How does a 22-year-old become so soulless?"
