NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: David Axelrod, ex-adviser to former President Barack Obama, swiftly rejected the prospect of incumbent Joe Biden not being nominated by the Democratic Party as their 2024 presidential candidate, while speaking with Bill Maher on his show 'Real Time with Bill Maher' on Friday, May 31.

According to Fox News, Maher cited a recent Politico report claiming top Democratic officials are panicking behind the scenes. The host also opened up about his concerns regarding the reelectability of Biden. He mentioned past remarks of Axelrod suggesting there was plentiful "talent" in the Democratic Party to emerge as the new leader.

David Axelrod's responds to prospect of Dems swapping presidential nominee

Noting that the first presidential debate between the presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees was scheduled on June 27, ahead of the Chicago convention, Maher asked Axelrod, "If Joe really s***s the bed, would that be a good opportunity to make the switch then?"

"Listen, that is a fantasy that I hear a lot," began Axelrod in response. "I like Joe Biden and I worked with him and I was grateful to work with him and I think he's done a lot of very, very fine things as president for which history will be kind to him. That's not the question. The question is whether at this age you should have run, but he did run. And right now he is the nominee of the Democratic Party."

"This is not 1968 where the convention is gonna decide. We changed the rules. Voters nominate a candidate. They've nominated Joe Biden, and he's not going anywhere," he continued.

"There's no generation of elders who are gonna go to the White House and tell him that he can't run. He is going to run and one of the reasons they want an early debate I'm sure is to focus people on this is the choice! It's Trump and Biden."

"I mean, you can take the easy way out and say, 'Well, I'm not gonna vote for either of them,' but one of those guys is gonna be President of the United States and people oughta focus on that, and give up on the sort of fantasy that there's gonna be another candidate," added Axelrod.

Internet reacts as David Axelrod rejects possibility of Dems replacing nominee

People shared their thoughts on David Axelrod's remarks across social media platforms.

"Most Democrats share that fantasy," wrote a user on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

"Maher is usually high on weed so he doesn’t think very straight," stated another.

"More than likely to happen as Joe is tattered goods, not saleable. The deep state can't risk having him on the ballot. Heart attack, stroke, diagnosis, almost anything can make it happen," a third user expressed an opposing opinion.

"Of course that’s the plan. Stick Hillary in the white house," commented a fourth.

"It’s time Bill wakes from his fever dream," voiced a fifth user.

"He'll be retired soon after the election, win or lose," expressed a sixth of incumbent Biden.
