WASHINGTON, DC: James Carville, a veteran Democratic strategist, says he doesn't think former president Donald Trump will truly appear for the debate with President Joe Biden next month.

Carville predicts the reason for Trump not to attend the debate is due to his perceived self-interest, suggesting Biden has a chance to help himself.

Notably, Trump accepted Biden's request for a debate within hours earlier this month. It followed repeated dares by Trump to debate him which he even posted about on Truth Social.

Donald Trump may hurt himself for not debating President Joe Biden

Biden and Trump are slated to engage in their first debate since the 2020 campaign, with the first scheduled on June 27.

Carville says even as Trump does those things he perceives are of self-interest, he thinks by not debating Biden, Trump will hurt himself.

“I don’t think Trump will go to the debate. He doesn’t do anything that’s not in his perceived self-interest, and this is one of these things where he could hurt — Biden has a chance to help himself,” Carville who was a strategist for former President Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign said in an interview according to The Hill.

James Carville: Donald Trump did not testify in hush money trial

Carville flagged Trump's hush money trial to suggest the former POTUS wasn't always true to his words

“He said he was going to testify to trial … When he didn’t testify, it didn’t cost him anything,” he said.

"There was very little … even, ‘Well sir, you said…’ so he’ll say … he’s already said, ‘CNN can’t host. They’re not fair,'” Carville explained his likely reasons for declining the debate.

“He’s just going to brush it off and say, ‘It can’t be fair,'” Carville said, adding, “He’s paid zero price for not testifying on his own behalf."

Carville said by doing so, "He’s learned, ‘I can do what I want. I can back out of a debate. What are they going to do to me?'”

Internet's mixed responses over James Carville's claims about Donald Trump not debating Joe Biden

There were mixed reactions to Carville's claims about Trump not attending the debate with Biden next month.

"Worst prediction ever," an X user wrote. One said he was "Delusional."

One suggested he will not watch if Trump is not in attendance. "Well, if Trump is not in attendance then I will not bother watching!"

"Nope, he won't, as long as he's ahead," one believes. Yet one more said, "Agree he won’t participate."

"I think it’s the other way around. Biden won’t show up to debate Trump," one user predicted. "Lol Biden won’t show up," wrote another. "Biden will get lost again anyway," one joked.
