Democrats may take Congress, but Carville admits they'll have little power against Trump

WASHINGTON, DC: While several polls suggest that Democrats may have an edge in the upcoming midterm election, stalwart political strategist James Carville warned that Democrats may not have real power even if they secure victory.

Trump's approval rating has reportedly slumped, and issues like rising living costs and corruption allegations against his administration have contributed to Democrats' potential in the November 3 polls

Why James Carville thinks a Democratic win won't result in actual power

Carville said Democrats may have limited power even if they take control of the House and Senate after the midterm elections. He said they may only be able to “embarrass” President Donald Trump.

Carville spoke to CNN’s Brianna Keilar on Friday, October 23, about the upcoming midterms and said that he remains hopeful about Democrats’ chances. But Keilar asked how they would be able to govern if Trump follows through on his threat to veto everything they pass.

Carville said Democrats would face a difficult situation because they would not have the support of the White House. He also said that the Supreme Court is “rigged” in Trump’s favor.

Carville advised Dems that they would have to show that they take corruption seriously as soon as they come to power.

“First, you pass a package the first day you come in, ban stock trades by members of Congress. I’m sorry, that’s low-hanging fruit. Do it. Corruption is a huge issue out there. Show that you take it seriously,” Carville said.

Strategist urges Democrats to embarrass Trump

Carville said Democrats should raise the minimum wage and make the path for workers to join a union easy. He also called for the US to leave Iran, saying Democrats could pass these measures even if Trump refuses to sign them.

He again said that Democrats cannot effectively govern if Trump has the power to veto their legislation. Instead, he said Democrats should do everything they can to put the Trump administration “on the spot” and “embarrass” them.

Carville added that Democrats need to make investigating corruption tied to Trump and his family a top priority.

He pointed to a Vanity Fair excerpt from journalist Matthew Cole’s forthcoming book, 'Princes and Thieves', alleging that Russians hacked Kushner's phone in 2017 and that he had accessed a UAE account holding hundreds of millions of dollars. Kushner has called the story false and issued notice to the outlet through his lawyers.
