MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: In a dramatic turn of events at the US Open on Sunday, June 16, Rory McIlroy’s long-awaited shot at a fifth major title slipped away, prompting a pointed remark from former President Donald Trump.

As McIlroy stumbled, missing critical putts on the final holes, Bryson DeChambeau surged ahead to claim his second US Open title, earning effusive praise from Trump.

McIlroy, leading by two shots with just five holes left at Pinehurst, missed a two-foot, six-inch par putt on the 16th and a four-foot putt on the 18th, leading to a heartbreaking defeat. This opened the door for DeChambeau, the big-hitting American and prominent figure in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league, to secure victory in a stunning finale in North Carolina.

Trump, known for his ties to LIV Golf, wasted no time in congratulating DeChambeau on Truth Social, while also subtly criticizing McIlroy, claimed DailyMail. The former President praised DeChambeau’s "toughness and inner strength," qualities he implied were lacking in McIlroy’s performance.

"Congratulations to Bryson DeChambeau on his incredible WIN of the United States Open!" Trump wrote.

"He showed a toughness and inner strength, matched perfectly with his GREAT Golfing Talent, that can never be denied! Under massive pressure, he pulled off some of the greatest shots ever made, especially his spectacular sand save on the 18th Hole that gave him the Victory."

"'Mr. 58' has always been a WINNER, and will go on to many more Major Championships. He is a truly tough competitor, even a nasty one, but he also happens to be a great guy. The U.S.A. could not be better represented," he added.

"Congratulations also to LIV Golf for their genius in signing Bryson and other of the best Golfers in the World. Hopefully Golf will soon come together as one, fully united, which is the way it should be!"

McIlroy, visibly dejected, declined to speak to the media and quickly left the course. His missed opportunities drew sympathy from many, including DeChambeau.

"For him to miss that putt (on 18), I would never wish that on anybody," DeChambeau said after his final round of 71, which left him six under par, one shot ahead of McIlroy and two clear of Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau.

"I think that fire in him is only going to continue to grow. He's going to win more major championships. I have nothing but respect for how he plays the game of golf because, to be honest, when he was climbing up the leaderboard, he was two ahead, I was like, Uh-oh, uh-oh. But luckily things went my way."

Internet reacts to Donald Trump's golf commentary

People online expressed their views on Donald Trump's swipe at McIlroy.

A social media user commented, "He didn’t dig at McIlroy, even though he deserved it for bottling."

Another added, "Trump, who has close ties to LIV and has been seen at a handful of their events in recent years. Felonious Trump is bigly deep in the pockets of the Saudis, to the tune of $6,000,000,000. They also gifted him LIV tournaments for his golf courses the PGA would not. Trump is well known for holding many course records and tournaments at the clubs he owns. He actually won a 2 day tournament at one of his clubs where he missed the first day?! He posted a scorecard showing what his score would have been had he actually played, combined with his actual play on the second day he surprisingly won?! Go figure! A master of the game for sure."

A third mocked, "No one knows Meltdowns better than Donald Karen Trump."

"Trump believes Rory should have called the result "rigged" and so incited an insurrection against the PGA," read a tweet.

"Trump would make a great golf commentator, LIV Golf are you listening?" said a user.

"Pretty soon trump can have a podcast from his "new digs," penned a user.
