WASHINGTON, DC: Former president Donald Trump became the oldest presidential contender among the two major parties in history after Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race.

When Biden assumed office at age 78, he was already the oldest president in US history.

Joe Biden recommended 59-year-old Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor on the ticket. Robert F Kennedy Jr, 70, is also fighting for an independent candidacy making Donald Trump, 78, the oldest presidential nominee.

Biden's dismal performance in the first presidential debate in June, when he looked weak and found it difficult to formulate well-reasoned responses, raised questions about the president's old age.

Following weeks of calls from Democratic politicians and fundraisers for Biden to withdraw from the campaign, he declared his intention to not seek reelection and backed his running mate. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have an age difference of 19 years. Although Biden's age was his greatest weakness, Harris' relative youth could benefit Democrats in the campaign and allow them to reframe the notion that Biden is too old for a leadership role and use it against Trump.

Trump had previously made fun of Biden's age and used it as one of his most important campaign arguments. He has also repeatedly taken the president to task for his verbal gaffes.

In one of his Truth Social posts on July 12, he wrote, "Crooked Joe begins his 'Big Boy' Press Conference with, 'I wouldn't have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president, though I think she was not qualified to be president.' Great job, Joe!"

The Democratic National Convention in August will formally choose the nominee. Still, Harris is already garnering support from influential figures including the leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus, former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic contender.
