CANNES, FRANCE: Donald Trump’s controversial biopic ‘The Apprentice’ reportedly failed to get any awards at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend.

However, the film directed by Ali Abbasi got an eight-minute standing ovation after its premiere, The Hill reported.

Donald Trump was against the release of ‘The Apprentice’

The 2024 movie, starring Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn, has quite been in the news lately as the ex-leader did not want it to get released because it apparently shows him in a negative light.

The Washington Post reported that the film also shows the then-young Trump as a New York real estate developer and his troubled relationships with his former attorney and mentor Cohn and his first wife Ivana.

This came after Trump’s aides slammed the movie and also issued a cease-and-desist order to the creators to stop its further release.

The Trump campaign’s spokesperson Stephen Cheung said, “This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked,” The Guardian reported.

“This ‘film’ is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store,” he noted, before asserting, “It belongs in a dumpster fire.”

However, the producers of' The Apprentice' stood by it and said, “The film is a fair and balanced portrait of the former president. We want everyone to see it and then decide.”

Regarding the 77-year-old politician, Abbasi added, “I don’t think it is a movie he would dislike. I don’t necessarily think he would like it, but I think he’d be surprised. So I’m happy to meet him, have a screening, and then we can discuss it afterwards.”
