Doug Emhoff provided necessary fuel to Kamala Harris' presidential campaign trail: Reports
WASHINGTON, DC: Doug Emhoff has stood strong by his wife Kamala Harris from the time it was first announced she would be running for the office.
President Joe Biden withdrew from his re-run campaign and instead endorsed his VP for the top ticket. Since then, Emhoff has kept himself busy and is a crucial part of the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign trail.
Doug Emhoff's role in Kamala Harris campaign trail
Doug Emhoff has openly spoken about reproductive rights and antisemitism in his public addresses, especially after the Supreme Court ruled on the Roe v Wade case.
“What we’ve seen is a full-blown crisis. We’ve seen the stories of women who had to literally be on death’s door before they got treatment. It’s barbaric, it’s immoral and it must change,” he said during his visit to a medical clinic in Virginia.
He also passionately spoke for Israel following the Hamas attacks on October 7. “We witnessed a mass murder of innocent civilians. It was a terrorist assault. There is never any justification for terrorism,” Emhoff said during the White House address.
Many believe that the second gentleman’s enthusiasm for sports has also helped the campaign trail, reports NPR.
“It’s something I love like millions of other people, but I do it to show that we can all come together,” Emhoff said on the 'Rich Eisen Show' last month about the NFL and fantasy league.
Doug Emhoff's wider reach with sports lover
Kevin Liao, a democratic consultant in Los Angeles said, “If someone hears, ‘Oh, Kamala Harris’ husband is really into fantasy football. So am I,’ the next time they see her on TV, the next time they see a TikTok or an Instagram video about her, they might be more willing to listen because they’ve had that introduction to her."
“There’s an element of relatability that Emhoff has to voters who like watching ESPN or who are into fantasy football,” he added.
Recently, Emhoff opened up on finding out Kamala Harris will be running on the Democratic ticket during his appearance on the ‘Stay Tuned’ podcast.
“[I] got into the car, pulled out my phone and my phone was literally self-immolated and of course it was a series of messages: ‘Call Kamala, call Kamala,’” Emhoff shared with host Preet Bharara.
He eventually spoke with his wife during her second presidential campaign launch and met her in person at the campaign’s headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware.
