NEWYORK CITY, NEWYORK: Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has announced that she is dropping out of the New York gubernatorial race and that she will not seek re-election to her seat in Congress.

In her announcement, Stefanik stated that 'it is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources to spend the first half of next year in an unnecessary and protracted Republican primary, especially in a challenging state like New York.'

Elise Stefanik’s New York governor campaign comes to end

In a statement posted on X on Friday, December 19, Elise Stefanik explained that after reflecting with her family during the Christmas season, she decided to suspend her campaign for Governor and end her tenure in the House of Representatives.

She noted that while she remained confident in her ability to win a Republican primary, she concluded that such a contest 'is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources.'

Stefanik expressed gratitude for the 'historic and overwhelming support from Republicans, Conservatives, Independents, and Democrats all across the state' who backed her 'campaign to Save New York.'

Stefanik prioritizes family and motherhood

It may be noted that Stefanik’s announcement was her desire to focus on her personal life and her young son.

She emphasized that while many know her as a Congresswoman, her 'most important title is Mom.'

Stefanik shared that she believes being a parent is life’s 'greatest gift and greatest responsibility'.

She stated, "I have thought deeply about this and I know that as a mother, I will feel profound regret if I don’t further focus on my young son’s safety, growth, and happiness – particularly at his tender age."

Stefanik reflects on a decade of legislative service

Stefanik’s departure comes after eleven years representing New York’s 21st District, a period she described as a 'tremendous professional honor.'

She also thanked the constituents who entrusted her with their vote and acknowledged the work of her staff in delivering 'significant results' for families across the district and the nation.

Stefanik ends the race after a brief run for a month

The Congresswoman’s gubernatorial bid lasted only about a month, having been launched in November shortly after the mayoral victory of Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani in New York City.

At the start of her campaign, she had pledged to challenge Governor Kathy Hochul with a platform focused on making the state 'affordable and safe FOR ALL.'

However, faced with the prospect of an 'unnecessary and protracted Republican primary' in the coming year, Stefanik has chosen to step away from political life to focus on the 'next meaningful personal and professional chapter.'
