Trump trying to take Zohran Mamdani’s 'shine' and rub it on himself, claims Elizabeth Warren
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS: Following the much-anticipated meeting between President Donald Trump and New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House, Democratic Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren accused the president of attempting to capitalize on Mamdani’s rising popularity.
According to Warren, the meeting appeared more about political opportunism than genuine collaboration.
Elizabeth Warren slams Donald Trump’s intention to meet Zohran Mamdani
On Friday, November 21, speaking to CNN’s ‘The Lead,’ Warren claimed that Trump was seeking to latch onto Mamdani’s growing profile.
She noted that Trump has long struggled with issues of affordability and sees Mamdani as someone who could address those challenges.
“He [Trump] has a problem. And Zohran Mamdani is the person who is now associated with fixing that problem,” Warren told host Jake Tapper.
“So is it any surprise that Donald Trump wants to stand next to Zohran Mamdani and say, ‘Oh, yeah, we think about things the same way, particularly when it comes to affordability?’”
Warren added that Trump was trying to siphon Mamdani’s momentum.
“He’s just trying to take a little of the shine that Zohran Mamdani has and see if he can, you know, rub a little on Donald Trump,” Warren said.
Donald Trump meets Zohran Mamdani despite differences
Despite Mamdani’s anti-Trump platform and his tour, “The Five Boroughs Against Trump,” the Oval Office meeting was friendly. Trump had previously called Mamdani a “communist” and even threatened to have him arrested for his plans to obstruct Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.
Yet, the meeting proved far from hostile. Later on Friday, Trump posted on Truth Social, “It was a Great Honor meeting Zohran Mamdani, the new Mayor of New York City!” along with photos from their discussion.

Trump congratulated Mamdani for his victory, saying, “I want to congratulate the mayor; he really ran an incredible race against some very tough people, very smart people.” Although Trump backed his mayoral opponent, Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani won a historic victory, securing over one million votes—a milestone not reached since 1969.
Mamdani acknowledged their ideological differences but emphasized shared goals. “We focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City, and the need to deliver affordability to New Yorkers,” the newly elected mayor said.
He highlighted the urgency of the issue, noting that affordable housing could transform the lives of the 8.5 million people currently struggling under a cost-of-living crisis, with one in four living in poverty.
