WASHINGTON, DC: Former US president Jimmy Carter has shared with his family his determination to vote in the upcoming presidential election as he nears his milestone 100th birthday.

“I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris,” Carter recently revealed to his son Chip, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Jimmy Carter's resilient spirit in hospice care

Jimmy Carter, who has been receiving hospice care for over a year, will be turning 100 on October 1.

He was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 which had spread to his brain.

Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on November 19 at the age of 96, was married to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter for 77 years. In her lifetime she was an activist and writer known to be an advocate for the elderly, affordable housing, mental health, and the protection of monarch butterflies. According to his family, the 39th president voted in the Georgia primary in May 2024.

“He’s not going to miss an election. It’s important to him. I mean, that’s the person he is," grandson Jason Carter said at the time.

Jason Carter revealed to Southern Living that the family initially thought that the former president might only live for a short time after entering hospice care. However, it now seems "God had other plans."

Born on October 1, 1924, Jimmy Carter is America's oldest living former president.

In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his "untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."

On October 15, early voting in Georgia would begin, so the Democrat wouldn't have to wait too long after his birthday to fulfill his goal of voting for Harris.

On Friday, August 2, Harris, who earned enough votes in a virtual roll call, became the Democratic Party's nominee.

After President Joe Biden withdrew from his presidential candidacy on July 21, Democrats have united behind Harris, supporting her bid for the presidency and breaking donation records.
