Fact Check: Did Billie Eilish’s NYC home get robbed after she said the city was 'completely safe'?
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A viral social media claim alleging that Billie Eilish’s New York City home was robbed after she said she felt safe in the city has been circulating online. The claim appeared amid discussions about crime trends in New York City and falsely linked the singer to a statement about not locking her doors.
The post gained attention by suggesting that Eilish had praised New York’s safety before returning home days later to find it empty and robbed. However, there is no evidence supporting the claim.
Claim: Billie Eilish’s NYC home got robbed
According to a post shared on X, Billie Eilish allegedly said she “doesn’t lock her doors in New York because she feels completely safe… thanks to the ‘progressive’ leadership.”
The post claimed that the singer later returned to find her home robbed.
It also included an alleged quote from NYC Detective Joe Barron, who supposedly said, “She meant well. She was trying to make people understand that the city is a safe place to live.”
The post further criticized New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, claiming that crime had increased after his administration allegedly reduced police funding and made the city unsafe.
Fact Check: Viral Billie Eilish robbery claim originated as satire
The claim is false, as there is no evidence that Billie Eilish made any statement about leaving her doors unlocked because she believed New York City was completely safe.
There are also no credible reports confirming that her New York home was robbed.
A search for keywords including ‘Billie Eilish’s NYC home got robbed,’ ‘Billie Eilish don’t lock her doors,’ and ‘Billie Eilish praised the safety of NYC’ did not show any reports from credible news or entertainment outlets.
The claim appears to have originated from a Facebook parody account called ‘America’s Last Line Of Defense,’ which states in its bio that “Nothing on this page is real.’
New York City reports decline in crime at start of 2026
The false claim surfaced after New York City reported a decline in several major crime categories in January 2026.
The city recorded its safest January on record, with murders and shootings reaching historic lows. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch highlighted the figures in a February 2 announcement, attributing the decline to data-driven policing strategies, while some critics pointed to weather conditions as a possible factor.
While overall major crimes decreased slightly, certain categories, including transit crime, saw an increase.
According to an official statement, “The city saw 40 shooting incidents and 47 shooting victims, compared to the previous all-time lows of 50 and 56, set in 2025 and 2019, respectively.”
“Murders declined to their lowest level for January, shattering the previous record of 22 set in 2018 and 2022. Manhattan and Staten Island went the entire month without a single murder."
