Fact Check: Did Brad Pitt say he doesn't care about his children dropping his surname?
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A social media post went viral online, claiming that Brad Pitt is glad his children have dropped his surname and chosen to use Jolie instead. The post comes amid reports that some of Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s children have stopped using their father’s surname.
As the post circulates online, questions have emerged about whether Pitt actually remarked. Let’s fact-check the claim.
Claim: Brad Pitt said he doesn't care about his children dropping his surname
The rumor appears to have originated from an X post that attributed a quote to Brad Pitt about his children dropping his surname. The post placed the alleged quote over an unrelated old video of Pitt discussing his work habits and solitude.
Brad Pitt on most of his children dropping his last name: “I really don’t care. I’ll make more children with my girlfriend. They’ve all been brainwashed by their mom. It’s their loss and their life. I’m pretty sure they’ll regret their actions soon.” https://t.co/B8X9HEZWUD

Its caption claimed, "Brad Pitt on most of his children dropping his last name: "'I really don’t care. I’ll make more children with my girlfriend. They’ve all been brainwashed by their mom. It’s their loss and their life. I’m pretty sure they’ll regret their actions soon.'"
Pitt and Angelina Jolie share six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne. The couple separated in 2016 and finalized their divorce in December 2024 after a lengthy legal battle involving custody disputes and other disagreements.

Several of their children have publicly or legally dropped Pitt’s surname in favor of Jolie. Shiloh dropped Pitt from her surname in 2024, shortly after turning 18.
Maddox’s petition to change his surname was reportedly approved in mid-September 2026, while Zahara’s petition was approved on September 28, 2026. Zahara had already used Jolie’s surname publicly for years. Vivienne has also filed a petition, with a hearing reportedly scheduled for around November 2026.
The post appeared amid renewed media coverage of the family’s strained relationships in mid-to-late October 2026. Between October 16 and 19, several outlets reported that some of the children had changed their phone numbers, making it harder for Pitt to contact them.
Reports also said Pitt remained determined to rebuild his relationships with his children, despite feeling that their decision to drop his surname was a “huge slap in the face.”
Fact Check: False

The claim is false. Brad Pitt did not make the alleged statement. The quote appears to be fabricated, as no credible interview, public statement, news report or verified source attributes these words or a similar dismissive remark to him.
The account that shared the post identifies its content as satire and gossip. Similar fabricated quotes about Pitt and his children’s surname changes, including an earlier 2026 claim that he would “just adopt another child,” have also circulated as satire presented as fact.
The video in the post comes from an unrelated interview in which Pitt discusses going “in hard” on projects and his need for solitude, which he distinguishes from loneliness. He does not discuss his children or their surnames in the clip.

Community notes on the original post also identify the quote as fabricated and point out that the video does not match the claim. Several replies and independent checks have reached the same conclusion.
Searches for distinctive phrases from the alleged quote, including “brainwashed by their mom” and “I’ll make more children with my girlfriend,” have found no credible primary source supporting the claim.
The phrases appear in the satirical post or in unrelated content. Meanwhile, media reports have described Pitt as heartbroken and feeling abandoned, while remaining determined to reconnect with his children despite reports that some of them have changed their phone numbers. No credible evidence shows that Pitt publicly dismissed his children or described their decisions as “their loss.”
