Fact Check: Did Clay Matthews undergo plastic surgery?

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Former NFL linebacker Clay Matthews is at the center of plastic surgery rumors after photos circulating online appeared to show him looking very different.

However, Matthews has recently appeared on podcasts looking like his usual self, raising questions about the authenticity of the viral images. So, are the photos real, and did Matthews actually undergo plastic surgery? Let’s fact-check the claim.

Claim: Clay Matthews had undergone plastic surgery

The photos appeared to show Clay Matthews shopping for groceries, with his face looking noticeably different from his usual appearance. 

TMZ shared the images on social media rather than publishing them in a separate report on its website. The post quickly sparked speculation that Matthews had undergone plastic surgery. 

The post also carries an "#ad" label, although it does not clearly explain what the advertisement promotes.

The unusual images prompted many people to comment on Matthews’ appearance. Some users appeared to believe he had changed his face, while others questioned the images’ authenticity. 

One user joked that Matthews had undergone reconstructive surgery to look like the "GigaChad" meme, while another wrote, "You won't believe how much he spent just to look this." 

A third user said, "This can't be real," showing that some viewers were already skeptical of the photos.

Fact Check: The claim is false

However, there is no evidence that the images of Clay Matthews are real photographs showing a recent change in Matthews’ appearance. 

An X Community Note attached to the post says the images were AI-generated and falsely portrayed Matthews after cosmetic surgery. It also states that no credible sources have reported such a change.

The Community Note alone does not prove that AI created the images. Still, it gives a good reason to question the photos and avoid treating the plastic-surgery claim as fact.

The timing of the photos also raises questions about the claim. Matthews appeared on 'The Ryan Russillo Show' on September 3, shortly before the images began circulating online. 

Matthews also appeared on 'Bussin' With The Boys' on September 3 with Will Compton, Taylor Lewan and Delanie Walker. They discussed the 2026 NFL season, with Matthews sharing his views on the league and making predictions for the year.

These recent appearances make it difficult to treat the sudden change shown in the alleged photos as evidence of plastic surgery. 

However, the appearances alone do not prove what the images show. They simply add to the reasons why the plastic-surgery claim remains unconfirmed.
