WASHINGTON, DC: A viral social media post has sparked fresh speculation about Elon Musk, claiming the billionaire entrepreneur legally changed his name to "Dogeus Maximus" on his Texas birth certificate.

The rumor quickly gained traction online, fueled by Musk's long-standing association with Dogecoin and the continued buzz surrounding cryptocurrency culture in 2026. Let's fact-check the claim.

Claim: Elon Musk legally changed his name to 'Dogeus Maximus'

An X post shared by an account named DailyNoud claimed that Elon Musk had altered his birth certificate to change his name to "Dogeus Maximus." The post included two images: a portrait of Musk and what appeared to be a Texas birth certificate bearing the new name, helping the claim gain traction online.

At the time of writing, the post had amassed more than 921,000 views and generated widespread discussion among social media users.

The claim resonated with many users because of Musk's long-running association with Dogecoin and internet meme culture. Musk previously co-led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a role that further strengthened his connection to the popular cryptocurrency and the "Dogefather" nickname often used by his supporters.

Even after leaving the government role, Musk has continued to reference Dogecoin through social media posts and comments about potential SpaceX-related projects.

The viral post sparked a mix of reactions online. Some users jokingly embraced the claim, with one commenter writing, "Omg goodbye Elon Musk. Hello Dogeus Maximus?!" Others questioned the authenticity of the alleged document. "That's not how South African birth certificates look. Which one is this?" another user commented, expressing skepticism about the claim.

Fact Check: Elon Musk did not change his birth certificate to rename himself

WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 11: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk delivers remarks as he join U.S. President Donald Trump during an executive order signing in the Oval Office at the White House on February 11, 2025 in Washington, DC. The claim is false. The viral post alleging that Elon Musk changed his birth certificate to rename himself "Dogeus Maximus" originated from DailyNoud, a parody account known for publishing satirical and fabricated stories for entertainment and engagement. No credible news organization has reported that Musk changed his name or altered any official documents.

Public records and reliable biographical sources identify Musk as Elon Reeve Musk, born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. There is no evidence that he has legally changed his name to "Dogeus Maximus" or any similar variation. Likewise, there is no indication that any official birth certificate has been altered to reflect such a change.

The rumor may have gained traction because of Musk's long-standing connection to internet meme culture. He has frequently referenced Dogecoin, earned the nickname "Dogefather," and previously used playful display names on social media, including "Kekius Maximus." Musk is also known for unconventional naming choices, including the name of his son, X Æ A-Xii. However, these examples do not support the claim that he legally changed his own name.

Moreover, changing or amending a birth certificate is a formal legal process that would likely attract significant media attention, particularly when it involves one of the world's most recognizable billionaires.

No such reports exist. The claim appears to be another example of internet satire that plays on Musk's public persona and association with Dogecoin rather than a real event.
