Fact Check: Did Gary Sinise accuse Tom Hanks of refusing jobs to homeless veterans?
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: According to a viral social media post, retired actor Gary Sinise has accused Hollywood legend Tom Hanks of refusing jobs to unemployed homeless veterans during the filming of ‘Forrest Gump.’ The claim triggered criticism against Hanks, while many questioned its authenticity, prompting a fact-check.
Claim: Tom Hanks refused jobs to homeless veterans
A viral post on X claimed that Sinise said he realized what Hanks was really like while filming Forrest Gump, when Hanks refused to let unemployed homeless veterans take low-paying janitorial or food service jobs.
"He said they looked dirty and they made him uncomfortable," Sinise allegedly said.
"It was one of the driving factors for me getting into helping veterans, particularly those who have been wounded fighting for our freedom.”
Sinise said the incident showed him how insensitive a Hollywood millionaire could be while also highlighting that someone who usually takes supporting roles for far less money could make a real difference.
"You can't be a superstar living a life of mystery on a Greek Island and also a good person. It's not possible," Sinise said, according to the post.
Fact Check: The claim originated as satire
However, the quote is fake and fabricated, as there are no records of Sinise making such an allegation against Hanks or about the events on the set of Forrest Gump.
If the claim were true, prominent entertainment media outlets would have widely reported it, but a Google search reveals no such reports.
Moreover, the claim that Hanks is living on a mystery island in Greece is a conspiracy theory, amplified by parody accounts.
The post was accompanied by a photo of Sinise and Hanks, which had an overlay text on the bottom corner that reads, “Nothing on this page is real,” suggesting that the claim was intended as ‘satire.’
