Gary Sinise opens up about family struggles that led him to stop acting
In an emotional interview with Fox News, Gary Sinise opened up about his decision to step away from acting in 2019, as his wife and son were both in the midst of their own battles with cancer.
The 'Of Mice and Men' star emphasized the importance of being there for his family during such a challenging time. Reflecting on their diagnoses, Sinise shared, "My wife [Moira Harris] had been diagnosed with breast cancer. My son was diagnosed with this very rare cancer you know, within two months of each other."
As reported by People in August 2018, Sinise had revealed that his son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, was diagnosed with Chordoma, a rare form of cancer that typically forms in the spine or at the base of the skull. This came just months after Moira was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Sinise went on to describe the immense struggles they faced, particularly with Mac’s condition.
"And the cancer fight for Mac was especially difficult because he was… fighting this cancer with no cure," Sinise explained. "And trying to find drugs and doctors, and trying to find anybody who could do anything for him was like a full-time job. Plus he became more and more disabled by the cancer as time went on and he needed more and more care."
Sinise, reflecting on the loss of his son Mac, shared with Fox News Digital that despite the profound grief the family experienced, he found comfort in knowing his son was happy in his final days.
"I will say this about Mac and the album that he made last year … he had achieved something that he set out to do, which was to record all this music in May and make a full album of it ," Sinise said. "That gave me a lot of joy … just watching him kind of enjoy those moments."
Gary also revealed that during this challenging time, he was caring for his father, who had suffered a stroke, while also looking after his mother, who would have been alone.
On a positive note, he expressed relief that his wife, Moira, has recovered and is now cancer-free. However, he recalled the heartbreak of watching his son battle cancer "until he finally just couldn't fight it anymore".
